How to work with an MP4 clip unrendered on the time line
Hi, it is too time consuming to have to individually render MP4 clips EVERY time I have to bring them in the timeline, and then re-render ever time I make the SLIGHTEST change. I was working with a friend and he went to the audio/video setting and changed something there, and then BOOM! I could suddenly bring those clips onto the time line UNRENDERED and work with them at ease and without having to spend a half an hour to work on one clip. HELP!! For the LIFE of me I CAN NOT REMEMBER what to change this too! I am inundated with options and I don’t have the slightest recollection of what the file type is. I may have a vague memory of writing that down, however my notebook that I had stored information on basically disintigrated and I lost pages of it somewhere….HELP!!

create a new sequence, and drag a clip in.
Then, if FCP asks you to change the sequence settings to match your footage, tell it that’s ok.But you will get nuts anyways.
And, why not call your friend?

Don’t edit mp4. FCP doesnt edit that format well. Even if youcan get the sequence settings to match. Convert the footage to ProRes first.

No you can transcode using compressor. But, if you want to try and preserve resolution, you should transcode directly from the original acquisition file format to ProRes 422. Set your sequence to the same exact settings, or in FCP7, simply drag a clip to a new untouched sequence and FCP will ask you if you want to match the settings.

Zoe, in order to help you, you need to give us information. Where did you get the MP4 from? Is there an original format out of the camera for instance? If you can, use the original format (straight outta the camera) and transcode using Log & Transfer in FCP, or other means. If you can’t do that, then drop the MP4 into Compressor and apply the codec you want, submit it and go get a coffee. You can also use MPEG Streamclip, it’s free and does an excellent job of transcoding at high resolutions. Do a single short clip as a test to make sure your workflow is good, so you’re not wasting time transcoding a whole lotta clips when it is not good.

Thanks for responding. The flip Ultra HD produces MP4 formats. I have heard of MPEG Streamclip and I’m gonna try that. I don’t know what Compressor is, is that something on the acutal application or a converter to purchase/download? I just know that when you convert things is messes with quality and I did do this once without doing so and could work with MP4s on the timeline unrendered, but I had to constantly save back up copies as I would get strange error messages and the program would lock me out and I’d lose the entire edit. I can’t remember what the hell was changed, but I’m told it’s not advisable from everything I can gather to work with MP4s on the timeline anyway. I’m going to see if I can get this Streamclip to work..

It would be best to include your system specs in your posts. If you are working with Final Cut Suite 2 or earlier, Compressor is part of the whole package. If you are working with FCPX, Compressor is now a separate purchase.
