Congrats Luuude. You’ll have to post your impressions for us when you get some more time with the new suite.
I just got word today that our upgrades (my boss ordered from Amazon) won’t be coming in until the END of June. I know it’s dangerous to upgrade in the middle of a project, but I’m coming up on the part of a project where I have to export lots of clips for steadying in Shake (boats shot from a boat – blah) and, with a backup drive and system at the ready, I was hoping the new smoothcam filter could save me some time.

Wow…. that’s quite a set of release notes. At least the first release of Photoshop CS3 was tagged “beta”. This will be a great product and a huge asset when it’s worthy of a whole version number.

This suggestion assumes that the questioner has a Mac Pro or late model G5 (PCIe). Maybe some more information about the exact system, codec, and equipment the person already has would help. That said, the MXO is almost certainly the way to go… if the money is there for it.
On a side note… am I the only one more reluctant to repy to people whose screen names give me absolutely no clue how to adress or refer to them?

Sounds like the concern is whether or not the poster can use their existing equipment (an NTSC monitor). As far as I know that’s a yes, you can downconvert over firewire and monitor on an NTSC display. You’d obviously need a DV deck or camera to feed the monitor video from the firewire signal, and I’d be very curious about performance of something like this, but it should work.

Not sure about making your own LiveFonts… I feel like that isn’t an option, but I couldn’t say for sure.
You could get the effect you want manually though… just takes a bit more setup. Prep your title in Photoshop and chop it up thinking about shapes and strokes rather than letters. You could use animated masks or cropping to reveal each part in Motion.
Something like this will get a lot easier with Motion 3. You could animated a paint stroke and mask it with your original text object to give the effect that the text is writing on. Come to think of it, you could probably adapt something like specialcases’s drawing lines tutorial from motionsmarts.com along with a text mask to get the effect you’re looking for.

Apple added support for their new(er) FX Plug plug-in architecture in 5.1.2. FX Plug is hardware accelerated, so you should be able to do more real-time effects w/o rendering. This isn’t exclusive to Intel machines, but it does mean that your graphics horsepower (or lack thereof) becomes a variable in FCP’s performance like it has always been with Motion.

Hey Drazen,
Getting all of your projects and assets moved over to another computer is always stressful. I think you may have less to deal with than you think. External storage is external… just hook it up to the new Mac.
You can use Apple’s migration assistant like Jim mentioned, but it’s SLOW and is built more for consumers who keep everything they ever need in their home directory on their single drive Mac. You can do this manually by hooking the Macs together with firewire and holding down “T” while one of them is booting. All of it’s drives will mount on the toher Mac and you copy what you want. You could also pull the drives from your G5 and put them in your Mac Pro… at least temporarily.
You have a lot of files in a lot of places, but I’ll bet they’re organized. You don’t just have a “files I edit with folder” and throw everything in there. Just go through the directories on your drives and copy what you need. Think of it as an opportunity to do a little spring cleaning.

I’ve used a VT3 and VT4, but only for live (or live to tape) productions. I hate them and I hope I’ll never have to use one ever again. /rant
What you’re looking for would be a combination of two FCP features. To “inherit” another clips position and in/out int he timeline you’ll want to use a replace edit. Put you’re scrubber bar somewhere int he clip you want to replace. Set your in point in the viewer and drag over to the replace edit tile int he canvas (or hit F11 – hope you changed the default expose hot keys) If you’re new to FCP you should read up on the patch panel and layer auto select buttons before you do this.
Copy / paste attributes works as explained.

Are you planning on putting the system drive in the second optical bay? That’s an option since you mentioned 5 total drives and the Mac Pro has 4 drive bays.
I agree with David. You’ll be happier striping all of your media drives into 1 big RAID 0. If redundancy is an issue, just get a big firewire 800 drive and use it automated or manual backups of your RAID.
