Thanks for the reply. Yes, the main footage is 1920×1080 so that’s what my sequence is set to. I simply dropped one of those clips into the timeline and FCP automatically set the sequence to HDTV 1080i with H264 compression.

The reason why I thought to upres the SD footage to 1440×1080 with square pixels is because that would make a 4×3 aspect ratio that matches the original. It should fill the canvas vertically, leaving black space on the sides. This is what I want to see.

However when I import the upres’d 1440×1080 footage, FCP automatically stretches it out, and under “clip properties” even tells me that it has 1440×1080 pixels. I don’t understand why.
