  • importing 640×480 into 1920×1080??

Hi I have a headache on my hands…

    I’m working in FCP 7
    1920×1080 HDTV 1080i 16:9 timeline.
But I also need to import a bunch of 640×480 SD DVD footage…

I worked on a similar project before, and the rendering time was ridiculous. So I want to do it right this time… if I upres all the SD footage correctly, there should be no rendering involved…. I’m hoping?

So I did a test, and used Compressor to try to put it in a format where the timeline won’t ask me to render. So far, totally unsuccessful.

I know the frame rate is correct, and I think I’ve exhausted every possible codec??

I don’t need the upres’d footage to fill the 16:9 screen. So ideally when I pop it in the timeline it should fill the canvas vertically, with 240 pixels of blank space on both sides.

The weirdest part happens when I convert the 640×480 footage into a 1440×1080 with square pixels. If I open it in QT, it’s correctly displayed as a 3:2 picture. When I import into FCP, it stretches out the image to fill the 16:9 canvas. When I check the item properties, it tells me it has a 1440×1080 pixel aspect ratio. Then I want to punch it because I know I exported it with square pixels.

What’s going on? Any ideas? Thank you so much!

First you don’t try every codec, you use the one that matches you HD clips. Then the sequence matches the clip also.

1440×1080 HD is a thin raster codec, in FCP it is not a square pixel resolution.

So what are the specs of the footage you are trying to match. Is it HDV at 1440×1080 or something else at 1920×1080?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the main footage is 1920×1080 so that’s what my sequence is set to. I simply dropped one of those clips into the timeline and FCP automatically set the sequence to HDTV 1080i with H264 compression.

The reason why I thought to upres the SD footage to 1440×1080 with square pixels is because that would make a 4×3 aspect ratio that matches the original. It should fill the canvas vertically, leaving black space on the sides. This is what I want to see.

However when I import the upres’d 1440×1080 footage, FCP automatically stretches it out, and under “clip properties” even tells me that it has 1440×1080 pixels. I don’t understand why.
