Ok. After a fresh installation my non-admin user account ran as fast as the admin account. For 2 weeks.
Today I opened the free Davinci Resolve again and it is not responding/crashes. I have to force quit it. Going back to the admin account it runs fine.

I checked with activity monitor, but there is nothing using too much cpu or ram. I have no clue what is going on. I need to finish a project and cannot use Resolve. Besides that, I have no idea how to “clean” the user account.

So I decided to do a clean install. I thought things would run smooth an here is the funny thing:

I always create an admin user account and a standard user account for all everyday tasks. After my clean installation I checked on my standard account and the software is too slow. I logged into my admin account and Resolve runs much faster !! How is that even possible?

The only difference between the standard and the admin account is 15 gb files that were copied on the standard account. No preferences or system changes, just some photos, docs, movies etc.

Why is the admin account so much faster?

Didn’t notice any major activity in the activity monitor. So I decided to do a clean install. I thought things would run smooth an here is the funny thing:

Thanks, I only have a few items at login.

I would gladly remove whatever slows down my account, but I wouldn’t know how to start. In times like this I usually do a clean install. Not the fastest option but I don’t know what else I could do, besides having multiple user accounts, which I don’t fin ideal.

    thank you.
apparently my current user account is the culprit. I created a new one and there is a noticeable difference in UI speed and general lagginess. I would have happily stayed in El Capitan, as it was running great with my hardware, but it seems that version is quite obsolete as it is now longer supported by apple.

I thank you and appreciate your opinion.

After considering other opinions it seems to me that “buying more drives” is just one of many possible solutions, which I am not convinced is the best. Besides cost, many people point out the degradation of the quality when transcoding.

[Marc Wielage] “So the answer is: buy more drives.”

Well, that is one of the reasons I posted my question here, to see if it is worth it. From most answers up to now it seems it is not worth it.

  • I had the same problem and it was solved by converting the a7s clips to prores. You could try this or making proxies.

My first attempt was when I couldn’t synch the original xavc-s and h264 from Gopro split clips.

My second attempt was to transcode the above clips to 422, as many people vote for a much better quality (I am aware there is a debate about that) The sync was performed great after that, but as soon as I started converting other clips my hard drive was filled with 3-4 times the amount of data and is maxed out.

To overcome any performance problems from the xavc-s and h264, and to avoid transcoding everything and buying another HD, which I don’t think is necessary, I thought of doing offline edit (which I always found a bit intimidating). In this case as you said I am thinking of working with proxy files. Someone mentioned that Resolve has a “create optimised media” tool that takes care of that and reconnects the proxies with the original media after the edit is done.

As I haven’t done that before I am not sure about 2 things in this offline workflow:
    a) whether at the beginning of the edit I should “create optimised media/proxies” for all my clips OR just the selection that will go into the Rough Cut.
    b) whether I should reconnect the final edited sequence to the original media (xavc-s and h264) OR to transcode(conform?) the originals to a higher quality such as 422HQ for color grading and distribution.

    My setup is a macbook pro mid 2015 / 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 / 16 GB / AMD Radeon R9 M370X.
It should be able to handle HD well but anyway xavc-s / h264 are not meant to be edited as far as I know.

–Edit: I would also appreciate any tips on which settings to use in Resolve’s “general settings>optimised media” tab (resolution/format/cache frames in).

    thanks a million.

Yes, two different cards, formatted separately in each camera and cold only read half the data from my card reader.
I am also suspecting formatting issues. What is your experience, is there a difference using an utility like the SD formatter application from the SD Association, than just formatting in camera? People claim in camera formatting is actually not really formatting. Any other formatting (or pre-formating) tips?
