Of course I meant ‘non-green screen’ there.

Where can I find this ‘autodesk smoke’ or ‘after effects’ for Mac OS 10.6.8, and would either of the two enable me to extract an animated image from a non-screen background?

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of FCP-X Garbage Masks. Using a 8-point mask I have managed to roughly cut out a part of a frame so I can use it against a different background.

However, as the image I cut out is an animated image, the shape of it changes with every frame. I don’t have green screens behind this animated image so I don’t know how I can extract the animated image from its original background without having to alter the shape frame by frame, and without taking bits and pieces of the original background to the new image.

Is there a possibility in FCP-X to extract an animated image from its original background without having to alter the shape of the extracted image frame by frame?
Also, is it possible in FCP-X to black out the original background when the original background is not a green screen?

  • It’s good to know that it is an easy thing to do. However, I haven’t figured out yet how to get FCP to play two clips at the same time. I searched and browsed the Help section, but also there I couldn’t find an answer. It might be that, because English isn’t my first language, I use the wrong keywords in search. So, can you please explain me how I can edit a video in FCP so I can play two clips at the same time?
