  • Green screen or multiple layers?

Posted by Wouter Servaas on June 8, 2012 at 9:15 pm

A couple of months ago I made the switch from iMovie to Final Cut Pro X, which gave me more opportunities making animated music videos. I’ve watched several tutorials on Final Cut Pro X and those helped me a lot in exploring all the opportunities.

What I am searching for now – in relation to the animated music videos – is more than just editing different fragments together. Ideally I would like to know how to cut out parts from one clip to add them on top of another clip. Perhaps this is possible using different layers, but how can I cut out these parts in the first place?
I have been thinking about using green screens, but that would mean I would have to insert green screens in the first place, so either way I would have to cut out these parts from one clip. Thus, I don’t think that is the right thing to do. Can you please point me into the right direction and give a step-by-step suggestion of what to do?

Hopefully I explained clearly what I’m trying to figure out. If not, please do not hesitate to ask me for a better explanation.

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of FCP-X Garbage Masks. Using a 8-point mask I have managed to roughly cut out a part of a frame so I can use it against a different background.

However, as the image I cut out is an animated image, the shape of it changes with every frame. I don’t have green screens behind this animated image so I don’t know how I can extract the animated image from its original background without having to alter the shape frame by frame, and without taking bits and pieces of the original background to the new image.

Is there a possibility in FCP-X to extract an animated image from its original background without having to alter the shape of the extracted image frame by frame?
Also, is it possible in FCP-X to black out the original background when the original background is not a green screen?

If you want to dig deep I recommend downloading autodesk smoke or after effects. Smoke is free for the next couple of months and is designed to do what you want…

Where can I find this ‘autodesk smoke’ or ‘after effects’ for Mac OS 10.6.8, and would either of the two enable me to extract an animated image from a non-screen background?

Of course I meant ‘non-green screen’ there.
