Opps..I meant I was going from 2.5 to version 2.11. I’ve been trying to download 2.12 now with no luck. Site crashes.

  • John: thank you for this information. We just need a very basic 16.9 HD backup tape to come out of the camera from any of the outputs (SDI, HDMI, ilink.) As long as I don’t have to dumb the camera down by selecting 1440×1080 SP mode, I don’t care what the format of the tape is.

Any help in selecting a deck is appreciated.

Thanks Tom. Once we drag a subclip from the logging bin into the timeline, it creates an in and out point automatically.

The problem we are having is once we have the timeline refined (by adjusting the in & out points of each subclip in the timeline), we can’t capture the original camera footage correctly with handles. Our editor says its because we don’t have in & out points set in the logging bin and, our editor (who is new to FCP) says he does not know how to only capture the timeline refined clips with handles.

GOT IT! I needed to select “Create Offline” in the drop down menu, rather than “Copy.” Makes perfect sense now. Will try it out with editor tomorrow. Many thanks.

I must be thinking of this wrong. Why would I have to spend time archiving a copy of the scratch media (albeit a reduced size) via the media manager process just so we can send a proper project file to our online editor? Seems there should be a more streamline way and without having to touch the media files.

Hi Michael: thanks for this suggestion. The media used to do the offline edit is very low res and trash. So, there is no utility (I think) in sending the low res media to the editor. We also want to be able to e-mail. Would it work the same if we just send the new project file created in this fashion without the media?

John: No. We just sent the editor our entire project file. Are we doing this wrong? The editor (who is moving from Avid to FCP) is also a newbie but said this would work. Sorry if this is a bonehead question!

Hi Chad: Thanks.. wish it was that simple! We tried that first and it’s not helping. FCP can be fairly annoying in that respect!

  • You guys Rock! I can’t thank you all enough. How about a invitation to my next Penthouse shooting? LOL

I have alot to learn about this process (obviously), and will work my way through it but at least now I have something to guide me. Thanks again. WLS

  • Shane: thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I just watched your fine tutorial and I’ve already discoverd I screwed up. I imported the XD Cam footage correctly but the Canon footage, I just copied it into a bin and started using it. It looks like I need to go back and import properly with that Canon plugin.

Bottom line, I need to figure out a way to use this Canon footage shot in 24p in my 60i timeline. That’s the look we have been using for our television shows successfully for many years in SD (video mixed with film look), so I am hopeful it can be done in HD! Cheers, WLS
