  • David: Yes, absolutely. This is Matrox’ online description of their Driver Version 2.6.10001:

“Installs the Matrox MXO2 v2.6.1 (build 1) software for Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2) and Lion (10.7.5). This software supports Apple Final Cut Pro 7.0.3, and Adobe Premiere Pro 5.5.2.”

  • After extensive trial and error, we managed to solve the problem. It is definitely the ProApps update. We couldn’t update our OS past 10.6.8 (early Mac Pro) and didn’t have a full clone backup. We started by taking Don’s advice and creating a drive with a clean OS 10.6.8. None of the XDCam files would play without the Sony Codecs of course so we then downloaded the latest Sony XDCam FCP “Log & Transfer” application which comes embedded with all the working XDCam Codecs.

Unfortunately, that software would not install without a running version of FCP so we did a fresh install of FCP 6.3 (I think). Once that was updated to 6.8, the XDCam Log & Transfer could install and we were able to again see XDCam QuickTime files. Unfortunately, most of our FCP project files were created with FCP 7.03 and now wouldn’t open. We no longer had the update disks to go from 6.8 to 7.03! Ouch.

Out of desperation, I went back to the old drive, did a fresh install of the XDCam Log & Transfer and also, just out of curiosity, I replaced all the files in the Library/QuickTime folder with the same files from the fresh install disk we had just assembled that was able to play the XDCam QT files. Guess what? It worked.

I am not certain whether it was the fresh install of Log & Transfer or the replacement of the older files in the QuickTime folder that might have been tainted by the ProApps update, we are up and running again.

I posted about this problem last week. I think we noticed it first.

Out of sheer frustration, I went back to the old drive, did a fresh install of the XDCam Log & Transfer and also, just out of curiosity, I replaced all the files in the Library/QuickTime folder with the same files from the fresh install disk we had just assembled that was able to play the XDCam QT files. • Tried deleting all preferences and the P-ram reset several times. Nothing. Tried repairing permissions. Nothing. Tried XDCam Transfer and even the raw footage from our PMW-350 won’t play.

Others are having this same problem: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5492686

We are getting seriously backed up trying to solve this problem. Any assistance is appreciated.

  • All files (apart from rendered and transcoded ProRes422 and H264) are black and can’t be played; whether native/unedited or rendered from FCP or XDCam Transfer. In FCP7, they are greenscreens. Nothing works if its MPEG-2 and came from XDCam.

Yes, the AppleHDVCodec.component is present. Thank you.

  • Thanks for the head’s up on Squeeze. As far as outputting to ProRes, it seems the increased file size and bitrate are not justified. The XDCam spec is is about 35 mbit/s and going up to ProRes gets you 212 mbits/sec. Where, however, does that extra data come from? Why do I need it if it isn’t there to begin with? It jus seems unnecessary. Obviously, I’m probably missing something 🙂

(I have pretty much solved my original problem by increasing the data rate in the Streamclip encoding to 5k.)

One last observation: when I export from FCP as a Quicktime movie, sometimes the spec shows XDCam EX 1080i60 and sometimes I get MPEG-2Video, Linear PCM, HD 1-1-1. What on earth is that about? I’m mindful of exporting from FCP under the XDCam spec but that doesn’t seem to make a difference. Can anyone figure that one out?

    Cheers.

  • We edit in the native Sony XDCam EX 1080i/60i 35mb/s VBR setting which I would have thought was the best way to go if we are not mixing footage with other cameras. It keeps the file sizes sane and I figured staying with the same format the footage was shot in made the most sense. The target is television broadcast/cable so it is interlaced.

I have tried exports using FCP, QT and Streamclip and still see artifacts and downgrade. FCP is too slow and wont do batches. QT does not do batches either and does not allow control bandwitdth. Once I figure this workflow out, I will have 30 hours of edited footage to encode all at once (hundreds of clips) and I just want to set up a machine and let it rip.

Is Sorrensen Squeeze worth the investment? Are there noticable enhancements to output quality? So far, the available tools I have are not doing it for me.

Thanks for the help! Cheers, Steven

UPDATE: In another thread, Don Greening suggested I reset/reboot the camera. OMG.. I think that worked! I’m still testing but I think that’s the prize winner! Thanks again Don. If you are ever down in Los Angeles, I owe you lunch.
