Perhaps I should elaborate that I don’t plan on using this system with a full time deck. I’m planning on renting a deck if and when I need one. (Most of my material is coming from drives with the footage already captured). So having my Kona plugged directly into my mixer and the mixer plugged into the studio monitors is how it’ll be set-up most of the time.

OK, I tried hooking up our DSR 570 with adapters to feed into the analog input of the kona card with the kona card still feeding the mixer and the mixer feeding the speakers, and there was no audio.

I know my mixer and speakers are hooked up correctly, cause I have my computer’s speaker output hooked into the mixer’s CD/Tape input and it works.

    What’s next?

One of the things I’ve done is to go through the tutorials (listed above) and save the finished tutorial as a custom template. This way I don’t have to keep going back to the source to find what I need, I can use one of my templates and either just change the files that are in it, or use it as a guide for creating something new. Bottom line though, do the tutorials. They are some of the most useful tools out there. The guys/gals who spent the time to create them should be given awards, especially since many of them don’t even charge for them!

December 4, 2006 at 11:34 pm in reply to: Mac Pro and eSATA?

I’ve been looking and I can’t find on Apple’s website any spare trays to be sold separately. Looks like I’ll just be using the ones that came with it and switching drives.

Also, I looked at the benchmarks at Barefeats. Seems like the drives to get are not Seagates. Something was causing a glitch that prohibited them from making Raid 0 drives internally with Seagates. (Though a firmware update did help certain serial numbered Seagate drives, but even then they could only be updated via Windows PCs).

I’m glad I’ll have about a month to test this before we put it into effect!

December 4, 2006 at 7:19 pm in reply to: Mac Pro and eSATA?

I’m actually starting my own small edit suite/business. I’ll be getting the top Mac Pro because of the built in SATA RAID availability. (Saving cost, and space). I’m going to be running some tests with the Mac Pro and it’s internal storage before I move 3K miles away from the company I now work with (and will be working closely with in the future). I was wondering if anyone had used the internal SATA storage on the Mac Pro like an external SATA? Meaning, has anyone used project specific drives in the internal SATA setup? Installing and removing drives when new projects come along? That’s how we do it now with our external SATAs on our G5’s. I don’t see any problem, other than it means I’ll have to shutdown and restart my Mac Pro when I need to remove/install drives, right?

I had something similar to this that I needed to do for a clip. I wanted to highlight the light parts of an x-ray that was hand held during a shot of a doctor and patient. I knew I needed to make a mask, but I didn’t want to have to roto the whole thing, even though it was only a 15 sec clip. So, I made a duplicate of the video, turned it black and white and adjusted the contrast, etc. Then, because it wasn’t perfect, I added a soft shape mask to the image so that the layer was just this small area of the x-ray as a mask. Long story short (too, late) I had a moving mask so that I could add a glow effect to one area without adding it to the whole image or roto’ing anything.

Thanks for the tip! This has happened to me before and it’s a total pain. Especially when all the footage has already been captured without someone checking, so you have hours of footage with more audio channels than you should have.
