    With noise patterns that are constant, such as AC, surf and hum, the listener may not be aware of the noise unless it occurs or goes away suddenly, such as at an edit, where one take may have BG noise behind dialog and another adjacent take may not. Using the recorded room tone, or world tone (if it’s exterior), the sound editor can fade in or fade out that noise separately from the dialog.

    Different projects require different lengths of room tone. A :30 spot obviously won’t need anything longer than 30 seconds, but a long interview may require more. However, I
    ve never used more than about 30 seconds and if I did, it can be looped. So I would say 30 seconds is adequate for most everything.

    Always record the room tone with the same mic and in the same position as the dialog to be covered was recorded. If you split your tracks (lav & boom on separate tracks), record room tone the same way. If during a take, an extraneous noise occurred such as an air conditioner, and you couldn’t repeat the take, record room tone with the AC on and off. This way, the editor can introduce the BG noise slowly and make it less obvious.

    I would suggest you hire an experienced location sound person for this shoot, even if you don’t have the budget. Miking four people with wireless and mixing the dialog properly is a challenge even for a well-equipped and experienced pro. The chances of a a first-timer” getting it right are next to nothing.

    Using a pro sound person will also free you up to concentrate on whatever other job (cameraman I assume) you will have during the shoot. You can take the opportunity to learn some things regarding mixing and miking multiple talent but above all, you can have confidence that the sound takes will be useable.

    If you have hardware in which the sampling rate can be manually changed (Pro Tools) it is possible to have a playback “speed” slower or faster. Say you recorded an audio file at 48khz, bounced it to a file with a setting of 44.1, then imported it back to the original project (which would still have hardware clocked at 48khz), it would playback faster – and thus – shorter.

    Most hardware devices will automatically detect the sampling rate and set the playback rate accordingly.

    Use the built-in Compressor/limiter. Set the ratio up above 50:1 (100:1 is the highest setting but I never use that much – sounds bad), set the attack below 1Ms, and adjust the threshold to the point where the reduction is taking place on almost every peak. Use the gain control to boost the output to peak at around -5db. If the peaks make it above -5, increase the ratio.

    I did the update – no problems so far. The update fixed an issue where Livetype projects wouldn’t display or render when the Blackmagic driver (or AJA’s) was enabled. It also fixed a general Quicktime issue that had corrupted thumbnails for image files.

    That would probably be handled through the show’s promoter. You would need to show some justification (music reviewer?) and possibly another form of press credential (NAB, NABET, AP, etc.).

    Countryman E6 – not inexpensive, but well worth the investment. Be sure to use a small foam windscreen on the element and don’t locate the mic directly in front of the mouth. It works best just to the side and slightly below the mouth line, preferably opposite the CU camera. The E6 is available in a flesh tone color.

    No. FCP, nor Soundtrack, will output a SMPTE time code signal on it’s own. You can generate it outboard with a deck, camera, or time code generator that has a proper time code out port. That output can be connected to the audio input of your FCP interface device. The captured TC appears as a very consistent waveform and essentially becomes linear time code, which cannot be read accurately while paused. It should not be recorded any higher than -12 db. An external TC reader is necessary for playback viewing of TC and it should be connected to the appropriate audio output of the FCP interface.

    A more effective – and less confusing – method for your project would be to rent a device such as the Sound Devices 744T and record your master audio track directly. The 744 will playback the audio in stereo and provide a TC signal to your slate. When shooting is done, import that time code embedded audio to your FCP system and every take will have correct reference TC and can be viewed directly in FCP.
