No rendering in an XDCAM timeline as well! Good for me since I usually stay in XDCAM for long projects (10 minutes or longer).

    We need more info.

How are the drives connected? SCSI, Fibre, eSATA, Firewire, etc.
Are they Raided? If so what level?

I’ve run into an issue where the ProRes HQ footage looks fine on the XDCAM timeline (both codecs set to 1920×1080-30p), but the exported video has the ProRes portions playback at a faster frame rate. I never did figure out the reason, but I did another ingest using the same codec & settings and it worked fine. It might have something to do with the Blackmagic Design version of the codec.

Other than that issue on the one project, I’ve never had any problems using other formats on the same timeline, even with realtime color correction and over 12 video layers.

[Eduardo Frade Miranda] “My system is a Mac Pro 3GHz 8Core, 8 GB Ram, NVIDIA 8800GT Graphics, and no AJA or BM. Running FCP 7. The footage is in the primary drive (it was in a secondary drive before, software raid). “

Could be the drive lagging because of the codec requirements. When you say “Primary” drive do you mean the drive with FCP and OSX? If so, that’s not good. It’s NEVER good to store 35MB/s video on the same drive as the OS and FCP. You should have space for three more drives.

The 8800 GT is capable of full frame secondary HD but it might not like it when mirroring to the canvas.

Jay, I do a lot of this kind of production, although generally not quite as interesting as what you’ve done on the cruise. It’s very difficult to do as a single crew person, but I have done a few. I would suggest a few pieces and techniques that might help.

Acquire a portable multitrack recorder (4-track) and connect two channels to the FOH board mix and then use a stereo mic (Shure VP-88 is great for live music) to feed the other two channels. You can record at the same rate as the camera (48k) and it should sync easily with video in post. This will allow you to use the camera audio for scratch tracks and more crowd applause and such. The built-in mics on the EX-3, and I assume the EX-1 aren’t capable of that kind of SPL, so it’s best to use a small condenser with a built-in pad. I usually place the “room” mic on a c-stand close to, or behind the mix position. I extend it as high as possible to minimize audience chatter. In your situation, you might be able to mount it to one of the scaffolding.

Nowadays I use a Sound Devices 744T and sync timecode with the cameras via a wireless link, but that may be beyond the budget and limitations imposed by being on the boat. Knowing those limitation, you did a great job. Let me know if you need help on the next cruise, I know most of the musicians already!

  • I realize I’m a little late to the party…I see the keg’s floating!

Anyhow, I really like the suggestion by Walter to have pulldowns/checkmarks for other related forums and an added hardware forum and better yet the idea of filterable views.

Another suggestion I have is to add a hardware/software configuration weighting to the results of searches and forum views. An example would be if I searched for a question concerning the AJA KiPro, the results would factor in my particular hardware setup (as stated on my profile) and return posts with users having an identical or similar setup. I know this would necessitate the creation of a field for each component in a user’s system, but it would be really useful.

September 11, 2009 at 4:22 am in reply to: Modeling an Engine (Motor)

I don’t know of any tutorials specific to “engine modeling”. You could try some tuts on polygonal modeling and boolean technique. That gets you through many engineering oriented objects such as pistons, cranks, cylinder heads, etc.

Use 3D snapping settings to define a scale and tolerance.

Will you animate? If so, find some MOCCA tutorials, or, if you have Dynamics, some tutes on that as well.

Ditto with Pyrocluster for the sparks and smoke. But a basic engine should be no problem with the base package.

Tangier, Here is the thread concerning the Open GL issue:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/124/868971#868971

Apparently, there is some conflict with the nvidia hardware, specifically the 8800, that causes problems, but fixing it would mean disabling other features for everyone. Again, I’m not even sure this issue is or is a part of what they are attempting to resolve. I just know I was told by all the Apple techs and the Blackmagic techs, to disable Extended Desktop as a means of troubleshooting.
