March 5, 2011 at 8:57 pm in reply to: Prepping 720p 23.98 file for 1080i 59.94 HDCAM, best workflow?I did a test output and indeed discovered the need to make sure the ProRes is truly 1280 x 720, using the correct pixel aspect, etc.
Thanks! -

March 5, 2011 at 6:54 pm in reply to: Prepping 720p 23.98 file for 1080i 59.94 HDCAM, best workflow? Thanks, John. I will re-render as a ProRes sequence for better image quality, there are indeed some important graphics.
So my deliverable to the facility should be a 720p 23.98 ProRes file I output from FCP, correct?

I shoot mostly documentaries where I show up in many different indoor environments and have to shoot with mostly available lighting. I have a CMOS and a CCD camera and on almost every job with the CMOS camera at least one room or wall or something is creating a strobing bar effect– rolling shutter– due to a particular combination of florescent bulbs and frequencies and whatever.
So if you are run and gun at real-world locations, be aware. It’s not always pretty.

Follow-up: I’m getting the camera back as is, Panny is saying it is more than likely the bad card that caused a camera error, given the cards test I did at the rental house. And they are replacing the bad card.
If further testing / shooting adventures bear out another story, I will share it for anyone who is having similar issues.
Thanks Michael…

Renting a card won’t help at this point because the camera is at Panasonic, waiting for my yay or nay to repair it. If nay, I still have to pay about 150 for the time they took to test and review it.
-
Michael: I will try and get to the rental house ASAP, see if they’ll do it for a modest fee, before I give the go-ahead for the repair at Panny.
Thanks for your advice on this.

Thanks for response, Michael. Answers:
“If the service dept test with your cards?”
–No, they told me not to send them after my description of the problem.“Have you tried the cards in another camera?”
–No, don’t know anybody with P2 here, but could probably get short session in-house at a rental place.“Have tried formatting the cards with software and not the camera?”
–No, but if that worked wouldn’t it still indicate a camera problem?“Is it just a formatting problem, as in, once the card does get formatted it works fine?”
–After formatting, a card may or may not get the warning, it seems unrelated.“If you are honest about the camera having an issue it is worth next to nothing on the used market. Fixed you would get twice your money back.”
–Honest is the only way to be, you are quite right about it needing to be fixed. I must take the chance and spend the grand, but it is a chance since the problem is not understood. -
Actually the client reconsidered as per advice of the fellow doing the layout/coding. They are not going to do HTML 5 right now, just 4. They will stick to h264 which essentially plays fine across all browsers/platforms they care about.
So although I did the conversions to OGG using Miro and they came out fine, all will be as it was before the HTML 5 alarm.
