  • Matt, I’m the guy in question 🙂 (Hi Emily! 🙂

I think she misread your question regarding “capturing a tape NOT by this shooter”. The other tape she was able to capture from WAS shot by me and was B-Roll shot with a HV10. It was downconverted the same way as the others… from an XHA1 to the same DSR-11. At this point, I think the problem is with the 2 DVCAM tapes, not my DSR-11. They may have a slight slack issue that FCP is more sensitive & detects & her DSR-11 handles better (which is why she’s able to play those back without issue alone with her DSR-11) and FCP kicks back some erroneous error during capture, saying it’s “reached the end of the tape” & aborts when clearly it’s nowhere near the end. Situations like this I believe would be better remedied with a workaround… such as making FW dupes from those tapes to different DVCAM tapes since she’s told me they playback ok on their own… or did I misunderstand Emily when we talked about this?

  • I’m not sure much of this is sound advice, Don. Coring at +9? That’s like applying the skin detail feature to the whole frame. This alone will make things look like plastic… especially skin tones, but if that’s the look one is after, then so be it 🙂 And NR2 on high? I think just with these 2 combinations alone aren’t going to make anything “better” than what it could be. And wait until this is encoded for DVD. I doubt there are many if any compressors out there that for the most part would make certain scenes with these settings look even more like mud.

    Just my penny’s worth.

By the way… I’m loving this (I’m sure temporary) no annoying banner ads right now. Everything is zippy! 🙂

Why not just get a standalone burner? You’re not doing any authoring… makes sense to me.

That’s quite bizzare, for a short bit he’s got a hummingbird wings thing goin’ on with his shaking.

All I can say is that “millions+” is for using an alpha channel, which if you aren’t using one, it’s pretty much a waste & may even make the given file larger than it needs to be (I could be wrong about the size thing though).

Since you didn’t mention what camera you have I’m going to assume an A1? In any event, once you disconnect the firewire cable, make your menu change, then re-connect the firewire cable.

You may want to make sure the text is highlighted first. That’s the only thing I can think of why it wouldn’t work.

  • “I have been reading like crazy and it still looks like FX1 beats XH A1 in both low light, reliability and image clarity.”

I’m not a “Canon Homer”, whatever that is… but I will say that wherever you’re getting this info, it’s mistaken. The A1 is so tweakable I wouldn’t think twice about getting another over a camera like the FX1. It’s a no brainer.

I don’t generally resurrect old threads, but where in the heck is this “show legacy codecs” I’ve seen mentioned here & elsewhere, for us PC users? It’s no where in QT’s preference/advance menu.

I have a client that is requesting a preview file with the Sorenson 3 codec and haven’t used it in so long… & just realized it’s gone poof along with all the others mentioned earlier in this thread. If there’s a remedy, I’d like to know about it. I’d also like to know the genius at Apple who decided this & why :-\

You say that your Nvidia drivers are current. That’s where I believe you should start. You need to make sure the driver is what’s certified (meaning tested) for your Avid version.
