But Walter is still right. If you have a system that works, leave it alone. Upgrading anything is always taking a chance. If you’re working on a 60-episode project, keep your system exactly the same for episode 60 as it was for episode 1.

Why do you think there are so many old Avids still working in LA? Partly because the systems haven’t changed in years.

Do you think going back to 5.1.2 on my system would work even if the project would not open on another system using 5.1.2? I tried sending it to a friend who has not yet updated and he was unable to open the project either.

Sorry, I don’t think I read that, or I forgot I did. Did you send the same file that had already been opened in 5.1.3, or a previous backup that still opened on your system in 5.1.2?

Do you think the illegal character would be the reason for this problem?

Anything is possible, but I would hope this isn’t the reason.

Finally, is there anyway to generate an XML file from a FCP Project file?

    No.

Maybe you haven’t archived your updaters, one thing I’ve learned to do only because I have to do a lot of installs, but I would reinstall 5.1 then update to 5.1.2.

When you render your RGB+Alpha, what do you set your color channels to in the output module? Try setting the color to STRAIGHT. That solves lots of alpha issues.

If that isn’t it you may have deeper issues.

If you reinstall 5.1.2 does your project (or one of your backed-up projects) open?

  • What I am not fond of is the “kick him when he’s down” posts of developers that say “You see… this poor shnook coulda saved an entire day’s pay with OUR PRODUCT” and links to my post begging for help – totally ignoring the request within.

I’m sorry you perceived that. It was totally not my intent.

I didn’t have all the backstory on how you knew all about Automatic Duck’s products, how you didn’t want to use it on this personal project, etc. I read “I’ve been fighting a problem all day” and I thought “I wonder if he even knows that this isn’t a battle worth fighting?” So I was trying to help.

Not everyone has heard of our products, so when they are applicable, I don’t feel bad at all about suggesting them. Next time you see a post from “Wes Plate”, you will know not to bother reading it.

    Thanks.

  • I have been at this all day

It is this kind of time wastage you can avoid with a plug-in like our Pro Import FCP for I have been at this all day”>Final Cut Pro. How much is it worth to save “all day”?

You should ask your Avid recipients what Avid codec they would like you to choose.

You could export to an Avid QuickTime codec, then zip the file before FTPing.
