I’m glad at least one other person has a sync problem, but not happy for you of course. I’ve found a work-around that seems to work, at least for me.

When I ‘capture’ to the time-line I must ‘un-link’ the video & audio and slide the audio 5 frames to the LEFT, then ‘re-link’. Usually, that puts everthing in-synce. After editing is completed I then make a sequence of the entire timeline and just before exporting to Encore, I again ‘un-link’ audio & video (now all mixed on one track) then slide the audio back to the normal position PLUS 5 frames to the RIGHT. This seems to work 95% of the time. I learned all this the HARD WAY, but spending 3 months experimenting on a single project!

I still have no idea why this is happening, nor does anybody else I guess, but the above work-around (albeit a pain in the butt) seems to do the trick.

Since few people have responded to my problem, perhaps you are right Joe. I can understand the longer project giving me problems, as it was a 9 camera shoot and I had to do some double ‘nesting’ etc and it was my first multicam edit. However, the last project was a simple straighforward film transfer, with little editing, and only 8 mins in length. It too was 3 frames off in Encore. This one has me baffled.

Regarding the ‘out-of-syc’ problem in Encore…I have discovered a little trick that seems to help. After I have finished editing on the PPRO timeline and everything looks synced up, I un-link video and audio, select the audio track and slide it 2-3 frames AHEAD. I then render & save the project. Then I drag the finished timeline to a NEW sequence (it usually crashes if I don’t), render that and then save it again. I then export to Encore and burn the DVD.

This seems to solve the sync problem. The trick is to find out if 2 or 3 frames are needed to sync up properly. I don’t think I should have to go to all this trouble to burn a DVD, but it seems to do the trick. I’ve used this ‘workaround’ method on a long and short project with good results.

Thanks Vince, much appreciated. I have three (3) questions for you.

(1) Where would I move the video & pictures folder…somewhere else on the drive and not in the projct folder?

(2) By ‘re-linking’ I presume you mean using ‘Link Media’?

I’m really glad to learn about about deleting ‘preview & peak’ files. I never have never deleted them, because I had problems one time and thought that might have messed up the project I was working on. I guess that’s partly why why this present project has used up some 800 GB’s of space!

Meantime, I’ve been using another ‘tip’ learned here on the COW. I’ve broken the project down into several smaller sub-projects. Things are working much better. I’m editing 15 minute segments. I plan to link these segments together, when I’m finished.

(3) In your opinion what is the best way to ‘link’ all these ‘sub projects’ into the final 2 hour video?

Thanks for the input Steven. Actually, I had already tried inputing the old project into a newly named one, but it instantly froze up. I only got an empty Import Files window and the Task Manager said ‘not repsonding’. I tried it several times with the same results. I also tried importing earlier ‘auto saved’ projects, with the same results.

I believe the new project settings were identical. I’m not sure how to check the old project settings for comparison.

I only have the last couple of projects saved. I deleted all the older, corrupted projects.

Any tips on what I should do next? I can’t seem to figure this one out.

For my part THANKS Alex. I’m strictly using the Premiere Pro color correction tools, but what you describe as Matrox correction tools sounds about the same. So, I will definitely give your suggestions a try, including the ‘dual eye dropper’ method, which sounds promising.

Yes, I’d like to know as well. I’ve fooled with the various color correction tools for days now…but, nothing really matches well. The Fast Color Corrector using the eye dropper for white balance, the color wheel (used sparingly) and the saturation, plus the ‘gain’ from the Luma Corrector get me in the ball park. However, it takes forever (8-20 hrs to render!) So, I’ve ordered a new computer to speed things up (I hope.) But, I still can’t get a really good, professional color match between the 9 cameras I used for the shoot. The cameras ranged from a Betacam to Canon XL-1’s to a Canon A-1 to a canon HV30 and a little Sony Digital 8. Believe it or not, the Canon HV30 looked the best! Now if I could just match em’. I’m growing old on this project!

Continuing our discussion of earlier this month. I still have some issues ‘capturing’ video with my Premiere Pro CS3 (particularly with the Canon XH A-1, as previously discussed.)

I have tried numerous experiments over the last couple of weeks with limited success.

A:: I disabled the AVC compliant DV tape Recorder/Player and only kept the Canon DV Camcorder #2, per your suggestion.

B:: I removed the old ADS firewire card, cleaned the terminals and reseated it in a different PCI slot. That seemed to help somewhat, although results were still intermittent. One minute I could capture with both my Canon A-1 and Canon XL-1, then the next minute I could not. I had better luck with the XL-1.

C:: Today, as an experiment, I replaced the firewire card with a new Nexxtech PCI 3+1 port 1394 card from Circuit City. It seemed to improve the capture ability of my Canon XL-1…at least for the first 20 clips, then CS3 froze up (the whole computer.) I then connected the A-1 and attempted to capture a single clip. Within 10 seconds CS3 froze up again. The last time I tried, CS3 froze up the moment I opened the capture window.

PLEASE NOTE: CS3 is also VERY SLOW to render a project (hours)…I don’t know if there’s any connection.

I’m really confused at this point. I suspect the problem lies with the CS3 software, but I’m not sure. Any more ideas?

Hi Mike,

I checked Imaging Devices as you suggested. ‘Canon DV Camcorder #2’ shows up on the second line (after AVC compliant DV tape Recorder/Player.) So, I presume it’s being recognized.

Any suggestions what the next step might be? I already contacted Canon and the only suggestion they had was to make sure to select ‘Playback Standard Auto’ and ‘HD Down-Convert’, which I did, to no avail. Otherwise, Canon suggested contacting Adobe. Since I have better luck with Creative Cow I decided to stop here first.

I know this is an older thread but, regarding the grainy picture…I noticed when I first tried using my new XHA1 I was also getting terribly grainy footage, even when working in ‘manual’. I then turned off the AGC and it solved the problem immediately.

I have another problem. I cannot capture my footage, ANY footage to Premiere Pro CS3. I’ve tried every conceiveable configuration, like turning everything off, plugging the firewiere into the camera, then the computer (and visa versa) and then powering up. I’ve turned off the camera and back on, changed firewires etc. I still can’t capture anything. One time I did get the picture for a couple of seconds, in my PPRO capture window, then it disappeared. I THINK I have the correct settings for both PPRO & the Canon, or at least from what I’ve read in the manual, which isn’t to thorough in some respects.

I might add that the TESTS I’ve made with the camera were done in various formats.

Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong? I hope I don’t have a faulty firewire connector!
