Once the NEXT button is pushed it goes to the menu and then the viewer selects another chapter to view(shown by a red arrow) and then pushes the PLAY button.

The trouble comes when the viewer doesn’t want to watch the whole chapter and tries to return to the menu. Sometimes the PREVIOUS button works, except on the computer player, where it does not work at all. And, sometimes he NEXT button also works. However, MOST of the time, once those particular buttons are pushed, and the action is executed, the DVD (stand alone player) freezes up and has to be ejected.

Yes, Joe. The Previous & Next buttons on the DVD wand amd the Forward & Reverse buttons on either side of the Play button in Windows Media Player.

I do have chapter end actions, but no overrides. At the end of each chapter the viewer is returned to the menu. The problem arises when the viewer wants to leave mid-chapter, either forward or reverse.

Knowing that, I MOST definitely will only use 4X from now on. In fact, I may even re-do the present master that way, just to be sure. Thanks.

Yes, I have learned from past experience that you only use a good brand name disc, so I only use taiyo yuden. For the most part, they seem to work very well. But, this was the last one on the spindle and these are not the premium brand, although I’ve had good luck with them. I also use the new shiny surface discs. At any rate, I did re-burn with a new disc and everything appears to be okay.

But, what you said regarding the burning speed is a good point. I have been burning at 8X. The burner is a ‘Lightscribe’ that came with the Systemex computer. I haven’t had any major problems with it, so I suspect it was indeed just a bad disc. But, I will burn at 4X from now on, just to be sure.

Thanks Jeff. I figured it out about 5 minutes after sending the question. I keep learning new things about this amazing program!

Another question, if I may. I am using a project, which I had saved earlier (with the 6 menu chapters & titles already built.) I also kept the same moving background and Main Menu layout and just imported new video segments, plus an overview chapter, which in reality is exactly the same as chapter 1. I set the Overview as first play. The project tests fine in preview, but when I burn the DVD and play back on a DVD player it opens the Overview and goes to the main menu okay (although it seems like a long wait, probably 4 seconds or so.)

Then when finally on the main menu I’m getting one chapter which will play fine, but the next sticks on opening, another one is without audio and yet anohter one plays in a staccato manner. Then when I played the DVD on a second, more expensive DVD player it wouldn’t even open! It also plays back on one computer’s DVD player, but not the next. Something is not right, although the Flowchart says everhing is fine.

I’m wondering if it might be the pre-built menu I used. Do I need to start all over again and re-build the main menu, re-import the moving backkground etc. Or, is there another possible reason for all of the aberrations?

BINGO! The COW mooes tonght! You hit the nail on the head Jon. Moments after I sent the last message I figured out ‘offline’ unlinks an AVI. I never knew that. I applied your renaming method, with the underline. Even just clicking the ‘offline’ on a stuck conforming file seemed to keep the conforming process moving along, until it was eventally completed. I renamed 3 different files before it was done. Now, at 2am, the project is rendering beautifully and I am one happy camper!!! I think I re-captured tape 21 for naught (I’m sure the ‘re-naming’ would have done it) but, at least the project is functioning again and in-sync.

It’s been a long, ardous road back from the loss of my source harddrive last week and a big lesson learned. From now on, it’s back-up ‘duplicate’ harddrives for me! I’ve been working pretty much night and day re-capturing all the video, and re-adjusiing dozens of shots. But, this proves a lost project can be reclaimed. This last problem of not being able to ‘render’ the final project was the most frustrating. The answer seems so simple…once you know it! So, thanks so much for sticking with me on this problem Jon. I really appreciate it. This is a great forum! i hope this thread helps someone else, as it has me.

Actually Jon, in the meantime, I have deleted the old video file T-21 and recaptured & re-linked the video to the timeline. At this point the conforming has passed tape 21 and gone onto tape 2, which is now hung up like T-21 was. T-2 has also shown up a few times in all this so it too may be problematic.

I’d like to try the ‘unlinking’ in the project file that you mentioned, but I don’t see it anywhere. And, does the underline go after the file name, like this? BRK T-21_

Jon, I tried a new project with color bars and it works just fine, so perhaps you are right, there is probably corrpution in a captured video file. How can you tell which file is corrupted? I notice that tape 21 is the one that keeps trying to conform all the time and then stops. It also conforms when I start a new project…it’s always conforming down in the corner. I brought tape 21 to the timeline in the new project and it renders fine, but perhaps there’s another problem with it.

So, I guess I have two question at this point: How do I acertain which AVI is bad and when I recapture it how do I get it to be recognized by the project? Do I recapture the tape again, then delete the old tape from the project and use ‘Link Media’ again? Or, is there a better way?

By the way, after looking at the Premiere ‘Tips’ site suggested by Eddie (thanks Eddie!) I tried a couple things.

* I removed an old version of Premeire 1.5
* I deleted a few old video previews used early in the edit (that
only created more rendering on the timeline)
* And, I downloaded and ran a copy of XML Wrench (which said the
files were valid and well formed)

An up-date Jon. I found an earlier forum on the Cow (last Oct) where you explained how to transfer a corrupted project to a new project, in an attempt to save it. I followed the instructions…copied the old folder to the new project, then opened up the sequence. The folder, with its files, transferred fine this time. However, I noticed while the new project was starting up that the little window at the bottom of the screen said ‘Conforming BRK (name of project)T-2.avi’ Consequently, it took a while to open the new project. I tried opening a couple of ‘new’ projects and the same thing happened, very slow opening. That’s not how it used to happen. It was always very quick. At any rate, after opening the sequence the same thing happened when I tried to render…nothing. The window just sits there. So, it looks like the ‘corrupted’ files were transferred as well.

Is there anything else I can do?

Jon,

I created a nested seq of the main timeline. Then, as you suggested, I tried File-Import, went to the drive & folder & selected the project, however I don’t see anything that askes me if I want the entire project or a ‘specific ‘sequence (which I have named and want.) I did try importing the entire project a couple of times, but Premiere crashed each time.
