Amongst other things that I’ve found to cause this error, sometimes images from clients come from the print domain, and JPEGs could have been set to CMYK color. This will cause FCP7 to just stop rendering and giving you an error message that can be a bitch to figure out.
As much as technology and software is moving ahead, unfortunately a lot of the clients and prod houses that I work for aren’t progressing as fast (institutional level lethargy with regards to investments in new tech) so FCP7 is likely to remain for the next few years to come, at least in this part of the world for me (Singapore).
I’ve started throwing more complex graphics and pictures/stills into Motion 4, which handles these a lot better. It’s not the most reliable software around, but I find where there is FCP7 there is almost always Motion, so i hope it helps someone
