Has to do with the “resolution of threading library calls.” Beyond my understanding, but I added the enviroment variable as they suggested, and that seemed to solve the export problem. Will be interesting to see if it makes CS3 generally more stable.

If cost is an issue (isn’t it always), you might consider a camera like the Canon HV20 for your green screen work, along with a Black Magic Intensity capture card. The HV20 will output an uncompressed HD signal through the HDMI port (live video only – once it’s laid onto tape, it’s gone through the HDV conpression), and the Black Magic card accepts an HDMI input. If you also bought something like the XH-A1 for your field work, you could also use the HV20 as your capture deck, saving some wear and tear on the more expensive camera.

I have run the HDMI output of an HV20 into a good monitor, and the image is gorgeous. I intend to try pulling a key off of the HV20 live output, but haven’t yet had the opportunity to lug my editting computer (with the capture card) down to the studio.

I do, but I wasn’t using it. I had created just a standard SD-DV project using the Adobe presets.

Thank you, Mike. I should have thought of a google search (sound of hand slapping forehead), but I guess I was stressed and under the gun, trying to get it done for a deadline.

Where did you find the reference to the Black Magic driver? My subsequent searches refer to a generic Intel issue affecting a lot of programs.

I ended up dropping the project into CS2 (which is still active on my machine), which exported it just fine. In fact, I seem to be doing that a lot. Try to do something in CS3 and I get weird messages about scrpt effors, or it just crashes, or it hangs up in the middle of an export. I punt back to CS2 and get my work done.

I’m underwhelmed so far by CS3. It took me some 10 attempts to get it to install comepletely, and the new features certainly do not make up for the instability.

Why avoid an Encore transcode? And does the concern apply to CS3 as well?

yeah, I know something must have changed, but I don’t know what. I cleared my preferences cache because of some other problems, but that shouldn’t have wiped out device control. But the fact that I don’t see the list of devices anymore suggests a file is gone or corrupted, but I don’t know where to go looking to restore it. Anybody know the name of the file?

Thanks, Kevin. I’ve tried reducing the size of the preview screen, running all my layers in draft mode, setting the resolution to 1/4, and I can still only get about 3-4 seconds in ram preview. I have 3 gigs of RAM available for AE, and I think I’ve got the switches set so that Windows will use it. Maybe it’s just too much data.

Thanks Dave. Good points. I use Cineform Aspect to convert my HDV footage before editing. It’s my understanding that Aspect recreates the intermediate frames, removing the temporal compression. It certainly makes the files much bigger . And it may be that AE is chocking on all that data. I have 3 gigs of RAM, and I think I’ve got the switches set so that AE can see most of it, but I’m not an expert…

I just connected my AH X1 to Premiere Pro and it is displaying SD output on both the viewfinder and external monitor. I don’t think that you can pass HDV video back up the firewire to the camera.

One thing to watch out for – fire up Premiere before you connect the firewire to the camera. Otherwise the camera will stay defaulted to what it was doing before – If you were passing HDV, the camera won’t switch to DV.
