Thanks Mike. I just started working with all this in ernest, so I am not so competant with it as yet. I found the 3ivx codec yesterday and was pretty impressed with the final product in comparison to DIVX5. I think this is what I will be using for the immediate future until I find something better.

Thanks for the knowledge Edward. I learned something. Too bad that it will do nothing for me since I am using the VIVO on my TI4200 video card for capture from an Analog HI8 Canon. I plan on trying to upgrade to a Panasonic GS400 this fall, so that will be when I get to use the firewire.

I have actually found that I had to run it twice and the second time it loaded a log file with the dat from the first pass, presumably to adjust the compression settings as the second pass was conducted. I ran one through last night using 3ivx, and it was really a BIG improvement from what I have been seeing. I think this might be my choice for the time being to work from. That way I can run from this a second de-interlaced copy in VDUB ( I don’t know how to deinterlace via a fliter, or even if there is one, in Vegas 4), and edit all this up for final presentations for the interlaced versions for family. I follow what you are saying now and from what I have read today I think I got to get with it on the codec choices. What exactly is DV AVI. I know AVI, but what does the DV denote that I should know? Digital Video? I want to basically get something that might pass through a second render once edited to give a decent finished product. Kind of a learning curve for me.

ummm… Now I am confused. The DIVX5 codec window has a setting for 2 pass rendering. I am doing some sort of second pass now with it and something is happening. Not sure if it is what I want though. I really have to get up to speed with the differant codecs and what works best in which situation. I have just begun converting a large number of Hi8, S-VHS, and some 8mm films to digital. I really need to get a firm handle on all this so that I do not waste time and have to redo anything. Right now, I am working with videos that are not so important to me so a little loss in quality won’t kill me. But my wedding videos, family reunions of folks long gone, and the videos from my grandparents (caught on film and transferred to Hi8mm) are really important to me, so I want to get it right. Someone suggested to me using either the VP6 or 3ivx codecs for a better quality of encoding. For now, all this will reside on Harddrives, but eventually I will want to transfer it all to DVD (once I get a burner) for archival purposes and sharing with distant family.

Thanks for the help. Everytime I learn something, it illuminates the fact that there are 10 more things I don’t know.
