  • Thanks for the informative response. OWC is a nice find, as are Lynda.com & the others. Further Q’s:

    1) Please say a word about platform. Cost is a factor for my friend. Maybe a PC is the way to go for her?

    2) I need a used Mac or two myself & cost is a major factor. So I’ll look at Core i5, yes? Is that the same as quad core? Either iMac or Mini or MacBook Pro OK?

    3) Is 2011 too old? Would 2012 (or newer?) be a big (How big?) advantage?

    4) 13-inch screen is kinda small. So either a Mini or and MacBook Pro with an external monitor?

    5) I see big stand-alone screens (Acer) are dirt cheap. But please recommend a practical display for use with a mini for say working in bed.

    Thanks!

Thanks very much for the savvy and really useful reply. Sorry for the delay getting back to you.

As soon as I get Mail figured out, I’ll boot mainly from El Capitan.

Will I have to buy a new app for Pages? (Mine is Pages 09; runs on Snow Leopard.) A quick web check didn’t answer this.

I have 20 years of email stored on Eudora. Any tips for transferring some of it?

    Thanks again.

Thank you very much for the response. Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes, I have had The Missing Manual right here for years. . . . It’s very good. Looks like now I should pick up the Snow Leopard and El Capitan versions. And osxdaily.com looks like just the thing, and of course there is support.apple.com/mac. Thanks again!

Many thanks for your excellent help, John! Yes, I’ll re-install CS2 before Affinity.

While I was in El Captain a little while ago I was so rash as to open Chrome. Now, back in Snow Leopard, Chrome wont open. “The application requires OS X 10.9 or later.” Of course I’d like to use Chrome or an up-to-date browser after I get going with El Capitan, but I’m still in Snow Leopard for email and misc, and would like to use Chrome from OS 10.6 as a backup possibility if possible. I could use another browser for now (WHICH??) while I’m in Snow Leopard but I bookmarked most of the open tabs—Can I access them from either system? I’ll also have to access the History.

Thanks very much. Before trying your suggestions, I tried re-launching PS for about the seventh time. Guess what!? It worked…………. I’ll save trashing prefs for next time.

Thanks Jerry. The System re-install perked up everything.

Except FCP 7 itself won’t launch. I get an error message when I try to start it up. Anything to do other than re-install FCP?

If I do re-install FCP, is the procedure dummy-proof? Will I have to un-install first?

Running Leopard on a dual-core Intel iMac from 2007 with 2 Gb RAM.

It happens on all sequences, in various projects–dv for example and also I think ProRes.

The scratch disk is the same as usual: one of several volumes on an external Firewire disk. Plenty of unused space on it.

  • Wowwww. Where have I been? Thank you!

  • Sorry, I should have said I’m using CS2.
