[Walter Soyka] “Even if the Mac Pro goes away, Smoke works today on iMacs and laptops. It processes on the graphics card, and the iMac offers passable ones. Autodesk would only need to add Thunderbolt video I/O support, and Smoke could do pretty much everything on a laptop that it can do on a workstation today.
“Yep, that’s what Autodesk showed back in July at our Atlanta Cutters meeting. Smoke running on a MacBook Pro with a thunderbolt RAID. Smoke on the Mac is far from DOA, not even sure what folks are thinking.

Um, what? We have it here. It’s quite alive and well on the Autodesk website and operates nicely with pretty much all your FCP hardware.

Standard used to be 1/2 day rate for travel days. Some folks still do this, some don’t depending on the client.

So you’re putting your media on the main system drive? That’s a no-no for any non-linear editing tool. Media should always be on its own drive or array.
Running the Operating System, the software and accessing media all from the same drive is always asking for a world of hurt with any video editing software.

“As with any Non-Linear editing system it usually comes down to system configuration on why anything crashes.
Have you updated everything on your Mac first and foremost? Run Software Update, after it completes whatever it does, run it again, and repeat until nothing else is needed to update. Some updates will not run unless earlier updates are installed, hence the need to repeat sometimes.
What format(s) are you using?
Are you mixing formats and framerates in the same timeline?
Are you doing the same thing each time it crashes?
Are you running any other software in the background while using FCP X?

Are you switching between apps or hiding Avid?
When we Hide Avid, we can switch between FCP, Premiere Pro and Avid with a Kona 3 and the Kona follows along with each app. You MUST hide Avid in order for this to work. It’s crazy that it does work at all, but at least on our two systems that have Avid so far, it does work.

There are plenty of reasons to still use a tower. This falls into the same argument that “tape is dead.” Tape is far from dead and towers are not in the past.

That’s what I said too, and I thought it made sense. But of course, when lawyers get involved, it all falls to heck. So the easiest thing to do is simply hold on to the legacy product so you continue to own everything that’s inside it.
