Quote for Overnight Trip
Posted by Scott Carnegie on November 29, 2011 at 9:33 pmI am quoting for a shoot that will have me fly to a remote location, shoot for the day, stay overnight and then fly back the next day.
Do I charge just for the shooting day? I was wondering if I charge more since I am “indisposed” until I get back home.

November 29, 2011 at 9:35 pmStandard used to be 1/2 day rate for travel days. Some folks still do this, some don’t depending on the client.

November 29, 2011 at 9:37 pmYou could have them make the arrangements and pay for the travel and hotel themselves, then you don’t have to bill them for it… You then bill your day rate for the shooting and perhaps half your day rate or an equivalent per diem for the travel. They might like this since I think they get the air miles/points rather than you.
You need to charge *something* for the travel, because of the opportunity cost of lost business when you’re en route to this client’s gig, you can’t take on anybody else’s gig.

November 29, 2011 at 10:12 pmThen day rate for the working day, whatever you think is fair for the travel, 50% is a starting point there, I would not go below 25% of day rate. Portal-to-portal.

December 16, 2011 at 11:30 pmOr just make your shoot cost such that your travel time is rolled in. Some clients might be more prone to question a separate travel time charge of X vs a single shoot cost of 2x.
