August 16, 2012 at 1:41 pm in reply to: How to become a millionaire with your current video business[Rich Rubasch] “How to make a small fortune in the video production business?
Simple.
Start with a large fortune.”
That’s right out of NASCAR. How do you earn a million dollars as a NASCAR owner? Start with two million…..

August 15, 2012 at 8:35 pm in reply to: A frank response to the posts ” I QUIT…. Working for nothing” and “” Worth It Anymore”??”[Tim Wilson] “Schools like Full Sail are doing laser-focused training on producing genuine artists. In fact, you have to qualify with a pencil and a paintbrush before they let you touch a camera. A lot of these kids have chops that you never will, and Full Sail is cranking them out every 13 months.”
They’re laser focused on the craft for sure, but I’ve yet to meet any of these folks coming out of the art schools who have any clue how to do time / project management. And that’s where they get themselves in trouble, allowing me to come in and clean up after them. They’ll hone in on that one part of the project they really like and then the rest of it falls apart. I’ve seen videos with absolutely incredible opening titles and graphics, but the video itself looks like crap because the person spent weeks creating the graphics and 2 days cutting the video, and it shows.
It’s one thing to simply know the craft. I have an 11 year old I can call upon to add muzzle flashes and all manner of SFX to AE projects if I want and he’s quite talented. There’s a high school not even 3 miles down the road with more SFX and video talented kids than we had at Syracuse Univ. when I was there and we are already making plans to work with the kids and get the involved with our projects.
That’s the disconnect Tim. Laser focused incredible talent is out there, but turning them loose on a project is something I would have a hard time doing unless they are just one small part of a large team.

1000% agree. Those who do good work with a lot less are a very rare breed. Those who charge less and turn out crap are a dime a dozen and quite honestly, are good for my business when we have to come in behind them and clean up the mess.

August 14, 2012 at 11:05 am in reply to: Correct Workflows with Premiere and Apple ProRes[Jeff Pulera] “As for Preview render format, I don’t think that’s a big deal – when you go to do the output using AME, there is a box at the bottom that says “Use Previews”. Leave that UN-checked, and your final output will be rendered direct from the original timeline without using any intermediate codecs/renders that would degrade the quality.
“It’s a big deal when you’re mastering to tape and not a file. If you leave that set to I-Frame MPEG, your final timeline renders will be less than optimal quality. We still master to tape for our broadcast deliveries.

[Andrew Bergner] ”
Walter, do you just export from PP to Media Encoder directly to a compressed format (mp4) when delivering a file? Any need to export or store less-compressed files like in FCP going to .mov first?”No need to export a file first and then go to Media Encoder. We generally will export a full resolution ProRes or DNxHD file for archival, and export whatever the client has requested for final delivery.

[andrea napolitano] “what would be the best way to export for delivering a video at 1280×720 that they can use for whetever they want in future? “
Just use the same compression scheme they requested of the original SD footage. Same compressor, just a different size.
So if you were delivering 720/576 H.264 files at a certain compression setting, just deliver the exact same thing, only now the files will be 1280 / 720.

We start with with the AVC Intra 1080i / 60 Sequence Preset for a delivery like this. That gets you all set up correctly in 1080i / Upper Field First / 29.97 TC.
When you’re done, Export > Quicktime > Choose ProRes for the codec.
You’re done.

[Daniel Stone] “For example, my DIT charged me “rental” for his dolly which he used to wheel his DIT station from his car to the blackout tent on set. It was only $5 but really?”
Bull. Unless you agreed to pay for that in advance, sorry, not happening.
[Daniel Stone] “My gaffer charged me round-trip mileage and driving time from the set in the city to his house (which is a 2-hour commute to the country).”
Again, needs to be agreed to BEFORE the gig.
[Daniel Stone] “A couple of grips charged me an hour of overtime for sitting in traffic after they left the set.”
The shoot is over, the clock stopped.
I would say these are crew members you don’t need to work with again in the future. I certainly wouldn’t. Everything is spelled out when I hire folks and if the person wants to be paid for the commute out to the shoot, they need to tell me that before or it’s not going to happen. Charging rental for a dolly to move gear is complete bull.

August 14, 2012 at 10:49 am in reply to: Question about the legal aspect of Facebook and professional photographers taken of you.[Donell Hall] “Again, Facebook is a for profit company…it would be the same as handing them over to Ford Motor Company. Facebook reserves the right to use any photo on their website for virtually anything they want thus breaching our contract correct?”
Not exactly. They can’t just use the photo for their own advertising whims as they once thought they could. They would require permission from the photographer and the people in the photo.
Your contact allows the photographer to post the images on Facebook as an example of her work. She’s not earning profit from Facebook, she’s using it to showcase her work. So I don’t see any recourse for you, it’s the same as if she posted 200 photos of you on her own website.
Facebook is a major marketing tool for consumer services driven companies along with Twitter, Pinterest and the like. You gave her the permission to use the images, and she is.

[Rex Polanis] “Everyone seems to have just accepted it and made their own way.”
It was easier. I tried working with the team at Adobe for a while to fix the problem, but honestly it’s just easier and more reliable to make the disc image. I was wasting a lot of BluRay discs trying to burn directly.
I haven’t even tried with CS6 yet, I still do the burn disc image.
