I’ll agree that CS6 is far from perfect. I’m honestly surprised the folks at Adobe keep answering the phone when I call….. 🙂
But in terms of reliability, playback performance and rendering performance, CS6 was a huge jump forward in our minds. Our biggest gripes with CS6 are the Track Based Audio Mixer and projects that go corrupted for no apparent reason. Also AJA cards cannot output to tape yet, but thankfully the BlackMagic card will. And we need to make sure the entire interface is on one screen for output or we’ll drop frames.
I just posted a blog with our workflow for episodics, documentaries and news stories in our shop. We’ve been running CS6 since it came out in April and have been quite happy with it. Quirky yes, non-improvement, not in our case.

Here’s our entire workflow with the current line of 27″ iMacs we purchased this year. They work suprisingly well with Premiere Pro, AE and Photoshop.

The monitor itself has to be able to display 1:1, there’s nothing you can do in the MBP.
That’s one of the reasons why we run the Flanders Scientific monitors in our shop for video output. They can go 1:1 or scale up depending on our preferences and are easily switchable back and forth.

If you’re up to speed on Premiere, it will run rings around FCP 7. If you’re still fumbling through Premiere, the speed of the application will do you no good.

We have not been experiencing this problem at all. Where does your raw media and Video Previews folders reside?
Ours all sits on a SAN or on local 4-8TB RAIDs. Honestly have never had a render go offline all year as you describe. Plenty of other issues in CS6, but not that one. We follow Richard Harrington’s Editor’s Guide to Adobe Premiere Pro media management structure where everything resides in one master folder for each project. Knock on wood, renders have been solid.

As Dennis mentions, large still images will bring just about any NLE to a crawl because it completely eats up the RAM. Huge video files are easy because they just stream off your media array.
One thing you also mentioned was you left your computer running with Premiere Pro still loaded all night. When working with a big project, best to quit out of the app each evening and we always shut them down and re-start them in the morning. A clean boot up each morning seems to give us the best performance during the day. We work with documentaries that sometimes have hundreds of hours of footage and it’s amazing what a clean boot each morning can do to make the edit go better.

How are we supposed to help without any information?
System? RAM? Media Storage? Version of OS? Version of Premiere Pro?
We’re delivering broadcast episodic series and documentaries with Premiere Pro this entire year. No it’s not perfect by any means, but it’s running really well here across 6 workstations sharing a SAN.
