Jeremy Garchow is in Chicago and something like this can also be handled remotely. I’m in Atlanta, but I’ve controlled Color systems in multiple other states for short, quick work.

On this I really differ with your opinion, but I’ll have more to say about at another time. Yes, there is real money to be made with internet based video, even moreso soon than with “traditional broadcast and cable TV.”

One easy way to use Color…..
Export a self contained movie of your timeline.
Send THAT to Color and set up the Broadcast Safe appropriately.
Render out, and send back to FCP.
This way you’re just using Color for Broadcast Safe and not for color correction if you don’t want to use it for that.

Honestly Color is the best broadcast safe filter you have. If Color is crashing a lot, then you have a bad setup or you’re using a bad workflow to / from Color. We run dozens of shows per month through Color and it’s foolproof.
Though I will say before I got Color we only use Final Cut Pro for all our broadcast work and never had a show rejected due to levels outside of safe. The key is color correct, broadcast safe and levels filter to ensure you’re legal throughout.

Really? So since anyone can get cheap editing software (and have been able to get cheap editing software for about 10 years now) that makes them a good editor? Funny how people think like that. Many of my clients come to us because they went to “so and so because they were cheap.”
Put a lousy editor in a 1 million dollar and what do you have? A lousy editor who’s in a really nice room.
Give a lousy editor really cheap software and a MacBook Pro and what do you have? A lousy editor with a really nice laptop.
Tools have never made the artist. The artist makes good use of the tools available.

Not a chance. A day rate is generally 10 hours in Post. Anything beyond that reverts to a predetermined hourly rate.
This is something that must be clear to the client prior to booking along with the hourly rate that kicks in at 10 hours.
As for taking a day rate for only 5 hours of work, if the client books you for a day, then you get paid for the day. I personally do not do half day rates because it’s not worth it. If they want to go “half day” then I just run it hourly.

If you want to stay in FCP, use Colorista. It can bring up light in a scene with less noise than the FCP 3 Way CC tool. It also has masking capabilities to allow you to lighten certain areas isolated.
Better yet, go into Color as suggested and adjust to your heart’s content.
The point at which noise and grain is introduced is wholly based on the camera and format of the original. Noisy, highly compressed formats will introduce noise much quicker than higher end formats. Another reason to go into Color, you can control the noise much better than in any other app.
