I would suggest you not to use Particular for this effect.
You can easily create this effect using Stroke(Generate Stroke) Effect and Trapcode Starglow.
Here is an example:

It will convert the selected layer to Adjustment Layer.

For example, make a new Solid , Apply Brightness and Contrast Effect to it and increase the Brightness. The moment you Enable the Adjustment layer Switch, it will behave as an Adjustment Layer and layers below it will get affected.

Instead of selecting Reveal Source Layer in Project, Select the layer in view port and press P,T,R, or S. This will highlight the selected layer in the timeline.

Alpha channel contains white that indicates complete opacity, black indicates complete transparency, and shades of gray indicate partial transparency.
You can create a Matte by applying Fill Effect(Effects>Generate>Fill) on your keyed Footage. This will fill your footage with white color and will look like Alpha Channel of your footage.
Your Keyed footage should be 100% Opaque which means there is no Shades of grey in its Alpha channel.
