Oh I am right; I’ve given up trying to explain to you why.

FCP 5 will have HDV support, when it will be available however is a different matter. If you are desperate now then get a copy of iLife O5. iMovie 5 handles HDV and there is a method for transcoding for FCP; you have to google for it, I can’t remember where I saw it but a method definitely exists (LAFCPUG?)

Sigh… You are concentrating on the P2 cost issue which simply is of no long term consequence. Panasonic will have no problem at all selling the first runs of these units I guarantee it. In a year’s time when supply will more plentiful the cost of the P2 cards will be irrelevant. You have also completely avoided the crux of my argument: any P2 cards that you will surely have for recording HD will be four times more cost effective when recording DV25! What’s the point of a MiniDV deck?

The short and simple answer is this: Panasonic needs everybody to buy P2 cards so that the profit centre moves, like all modern manufacturing, from the device to the consumable. It also needs the volume to increase so that costs will get down to the sweet spot where the retail price becomes generally acceptable. The future is tapeless. I don’t think anybody could argue with those statements. Since you will need a couple of 4GB P2’s for recording DV100HD, the whole raison d’etre of this camera, then those cards represent four times as much sense and value if you are recording DV25! There is no point in a MiniDV drive. Panasonic are trying to ween you off tape drives, not provide comfort blankets.

The page has been ‘404’ed now which may or may not add to its veracity.

There won’t be a tape transport. It would totally negate the point of the camera and Panasonic’s strategy.

  • There’s no ‘probable’ about it. The internal drives on a G5 will give you a regular 50MB/s read/write. As I said, do it every day. For multiple streams in FCP a raid is required but many editing jobs don’t need it.

  • Get a Blackmagic or AJA SDI card and you are away. The internal drives will capture 10bit uncomressed without a problem. I do it everyday. Keep the non-System drive as empty as possible and use it as your scratch drive for capture and playback.
