And if you don’t have a digital camcorder, and have 200 bucks to spend, take a look at the Canopus AVC line of products, it will do the same thing, less painfully, that is convert analog to digital on the fly.

I didn’t really answer your last question, and I didn’t realise that you were actually working on a computer CRT.
Yes an external NTSC broadcast monitor would be the solution, at least for the next few years, but it’s costly.
As an alternative, you can get a firewire card, and send it to the camcorder through firewire and preview your footage on a TV.

I am assuming here that you haven’t looked a the YC waveform for your footage, and that the monitor isn’t really calibrated. Two things first to consider. The LCD screen on a camera isn’t usually accurate in brightness (at all), and is often impossible to actually calibrate, and your CRT monitor loses brightness over time. The best way to see how bright your picture really is in realty is to use a waveform monitor. (There is one in premiere, called YC waveform in the preview monitor options)

I understand the not wanting to go with the latest, but PP 6.5 was a little like Windows Me if you know what I mean. There’s a reason they restarted at 1.0 🙂
A few more stabs, when you reinstalled did you delete all the folders in program files ?
You might also be able to find some other codecs online and install them to see if “they work”.
I still think that it probably is an OS issue… A least you know a new clean install “will work” however painful it is.

Well, you are dealing with old technology here, even if it’s only a few years old.
It ‘s been a while since i’ve worked with premiere 6.5, but you should be able to reset the preferences, that’s what I would look into first. Second, the idea of going to DV, and then to Mpge2 should be avoided. Isn’t there an mpgeg2 export in 6.5 (I mean, once it’s fixed)
Your last resort maybe a clean win2k install.

If you have Premiere 2.0, it should be there by default, or by bringing up the “Audio” workspace, so I’m assuming that you have Premiere 1.5 or below, and well, it’s been a while, but I’m pretty sure that you can find it under the “Window” menu.
