Unlike most others, Canon cameras (5D, 7D) actually store video 0-255, resulting in crushed blacks/whites and messed up colors if not properly decoded.

    Depends on your preferences.

Editing style depends on your preferences. Making popular editing styles easy is a matter of software design. My original point had absolutely nothing to do with personal preferences, or exactly which keys do what, for that matter. If some popular tasks or actions or editing styles are easy in Premiere and are harder or more awkward in Vegas, then Vegas will have a tough time wooing people away from Premiere. Simple as that.

This illustrates my point exactly. Having to toggle ripple editing on and off, or use two commands for each ripple edit, is not nearly as convenient as just doing ctrl+drag in Premiere. In my opinion, Vegas should strive to make everything at least as easy as it is in Premiere, if not easier, in order to surpass Premiere. Even though I think Premiere is a piece of junk in many ways, the simplicity of all the various editing commands allows me to work really fast.

How would the particular board account for poor performance in PP3 when PP1.5 and Vegas have no problem? Seriously. If you have any information, please do share.

It seems like having ripple edit enabled is a lot like using the ripple edit tool in Premiere. But you can also hold down Ctrl in Premiere and drag the end of a clip, which I love and use all day long. That way I don’t have to do an extra action to toggle back and forth between regular trimming and ripple trimming. I can’t seem to find that feature in Vegas.

It already does this – with 3 choices as to what’s affected.

How do you do a quick ripple edit on the end of a clip?

I’ve used this feature on my dpsVelocity and I prefer the way Vegas does it (nested vegs or having multiple copies of it open).

I don’t really think it is a matter of one way or the other. It would be cool if Vegas had both!

In the 960×540 example, the project and the sources are all 960×540. No rendering is taking place.

In all of our tests, with different frame sizes and codecs, Premiere 1.5 seems to achieve about twice the frame rate during playback over CS3. Its quite consistent. Sony Vegas seems to get about 4 times the frame rate. So it seems like something is wrong with CS3. And the surging and lagging in the frame rate is unique to CS3. We are starting to suspect that the rate control algorithm in CS3 is at least part of the problem, as playback oscillates between falling behind and catching up instead of finding a steady sustainable rate. One thing that is kind of cool about Vegas is that they display the frame rate during playback, so you can precisely see how different choices like frame size and codec affect playback.

Systems is dual core, 2GB ram, XP.

As I mentioned, PP CS3 can’t even smoothly play back a simple clip in a simple sequence in an fresh, empty project. If that stresses Premiere, there is something wrong! Besides, PP1.5 and Vegas both perform just fine, so it can’t be some general deficiency in the hardware.
