is there any thing in the appearance palette? does this happen even if you open up a new doc and start drawing shapes?

the last thing i would try is resetting your preferences.

i would make a backup of the preference file before you do this just in case.

  • i would suggest using the place command. in both programs you can find the place command under file/Place. you simply need to select the file you want to place and it will bring it in. as for which way is better. AI-2-ID or ID-2-AI. that is something I have never tested. I personally would just import the Illustrator artwork file into InDesign.

do you know if your layer is in CMYK or gray scale? if you look at the color palette, you need to make sure that you are NOT in grayscale. if you click on the drop down menu and you can select between gray scale, cmyk and RGB. some times this changes if you do a one color live trace.

thanks again. i was thinking of getting a nice larger format canon with inkjet for home proofs. i have heard they are really close to most professional presses. I use to have a larger 7750 xerox and had a ton of issues getting it set up. It also got miss used by some other people in my office and causes the fans and fuser to fail. because they were slamming heavy card stock through it without changing the settings to card stock. which basically caused the unit to over heat. i also had a hell of a time trying to get registration marks to line up. you figured for the price they would be a little more user friendly.

BTW i really love the look of your site. very clean.

WOW! Thank you so much… i kind of figured that was the case. i was hoping you would say some new technology is coming out that would make wide format printers more affordable to home users. i had no idea that the large format ink was different then consumer inks. is there a way to make a consumer printer to use oil based ink? namely canon printers. also how can you tell if a printer uses oil or water based inks?

what kind of xerox would you suggest. i would love one that supports 11×17 or larger paper so i can at least do proofs at home. i have had a ton of horrible problems with brother and HP products… i miss the days where scanners were scanners and printers were printers… this all in one crap makes me crazy… every time i use one of these all in one scanners it just sucks… and the printing is about the same.

could you post a simplified copy of your project? i think i know what the issue is. you might need to use the gradient tool to correct the issue of that one object showing up black.

here is a video that might help you get a better grasp on the gradient tool.

as for the printer… there isn’t a home office style printer that can print metallic ink that I know of… if you want one that does you will need deep pockets. usually it is a wide format printer and, they are really pricy.

no disrespect… but i’m confused… what are you trying to do? i just want to make sure we are all talking about the same thing. if you can show a screen grab example in pagemaker that might help. i no longer run that version of AI on any of my systems but i might be able to give you a work around if you can wait until this evening.

sorry for my slow response network issues at work.

It still doesn’t look like you have the color palette open from this screen grab. What you have open in your screen grab is the Color guide… not the same thing as the color palette. the easiest and fastest way to bring it up is the keyboard short cut. which is F6. again review what i posted before. this is for cs 5.5 not sure if the F6 keyboard shortcut is the same for cs6.

as for live trace always making the color palette black and white… it only does that if you select the 1 or two color logo live trace preset. also i don’t know how your have your live trace setting. i normal just use a preset myself.

As for the size…i did some testing and found that the higher the dpi of your source image the cleaner the trace… but remember… if you just change the dpi on a really small image it may not make a huge difference.. as the saying goes … crap in, crap out…

This happens some times, it’s easy to fix. Go to the window menu at the top of the program. Make sure there is a check box next to the color palette. Now go and find the color palette. In the upper right corner of the color palette there is a arrow button. In that menu you need to select RGB. sense the logo is for broadcast. This will unlock the r,g,b color sliders in this palette. If this solves your problems please check it as a solution.
