Hello Jim and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Canon 7D….I remember that when the 5D Mkiii came out it was first in the series that could actually record audio well at all.

System noise has many sources. Could be something as simple as the lav itself being noisier.

I can see and capture audio and video from a VHS deck plugged into my 1394 enabled mini DV source JVC box quite well in FCP X.

Thom, the 635 has less pop protection and less handling noise isolation. Its handle is shorter.

The 42 works well. The RODE reporter will also do.

Hello Dennis,

The input of the camera is stereo. You need a specially wired cable to feed the mono output of the G3 into the stereo input of the Vixia. It wold not look any different than a typical cable. It would, however be wired to take the + (tip) side of the mic and apply it to both the tip and ring on the other end, which you would plug into the camera. The audio would then go to both Vixia channels.

Right now, you’re effectively cancelling the audio out by feeding the positive peaks to one channel and the negative peaks to the other channel of the Vixia. Test this by using a stereo input to the Vixia.

If the audio jack on your camera is a four-pin design, you may or may not have other problems.

Different horses for different courses. A lav on a talent will probably sounds a lot better than an NT4 clamped to your camera. Rig a boom, locked down or otherwise, with the NT4 no more than 18″ from your talent and the NT4 will likely win.

Yes, you do have to have enough gain control to allow for the LOUD PERSON.

Sometimes it’s nerves. Sometimes they are theater people trained to hit the back wall because they have seldom used a mic. Sometimes they are very uncertain they are being heard in the space and that uncertainty leads them to bellow. Of course, they don’t realize that the lav is picking them up.

You might call that first take a rehearsal. Just a paragraph or two. If they bellow, cut and do a playback for them that they can see and hear. That might allow them to “get it” that they don’t need to bellow.

That MAY work, but some people can’t change.
