18″-24″ means something is ON in the space.
Perhaps there is an existing system in the venue in which you’re having problems and they have the gear turned on even though it is not in use.
That happened to me once and none of my wireless worked. I knew they had wireless (another mfgr) they checcked and the darn thing was on. They turned it off. I was fine.

Sorry for your pain. Maybe a simple line out to mic in problem?
Were you listening to the audio at the two destination decks?
I kept getting challenged by that this week on shoot here. The shooter would leave to shoot B-roll. When he came back, he wouldn’t tell me he’d changed the audio setup. (To all shooters; play nice. Communicate with your sound folks.)
Each time he came back I had to go through a few seconds of WTF!? before I realized he’d been playing with the audio. First time it happened, the return to my mixer was way low on one track. As I dialed through the monitor options on the 442, I listened to that one channel in both ears. I realized it was the camera mic. He was telling me it was something wrong with my headphone cable. (Must be YOUR gear problem. It’s not MINE.) Had I let it go, the recording on that channel would have been crap.
When I realized what he had done. I simply said, “No you have your camera mic turned on. Wanna turn it off now?” The I rechecked the levels. I will give him credit. He did have his gain knobs taped down.

How about just recording separately to a Sound Devices 744T?

Rent a Neumann TLM103 with a suspension mount with a pop filter and a digital HD recorder witth 24-bit 44.1 kHHz or better capacity with a good mic preamp. Get a set of Sony MDR 7506 headphones.
Go into each house and record a sample then turn off the HVAC and the refrigerator and any other motor-based devices and record again with the mic in the same place. Turn the mic to different positions.
Setup outside each house and record again.
1/4 mile is a long way for LF to travel. It’d have to be pretty durn loud at the site itself.

Several thoughts:
1. It’s most likely that the mic was overdriving the mic input. It’s also possible that the mic element itself was being overdriven. If the element is being overdriven, you’re pretty much done with that mic for these sorts of shoots.
2. If it’s not the element, and you’re in manual gain adjustment mode try reducing the input gain to the camera or try using the auto gain function.

2-explained in 1st paragraph(nothing special, I’d love to buy a -100$ mic if possible because I’m still a student and man everything in video/film/photography is expensive especially if you are not making any money and learning.
Investing in good tools early is really important. If you start with crap, you’ll have crap audio. There are reasons the AT 4050 costs more than the AT 2020. Having said that, there is an AT2020 video in the Video of my On Line Archive that’ll let you know what the 2020 sounds like.
3- Don’t have a recording space right now but will probably get egg cardboard foam. and surround the person speaking so there’s no audio bouncing off walls.
Egg cardbaord foam? I’ve seen egg foam and cardborad egg holders, but never egg cardboard foam. Do explain. You’ll need to do a lot more than put egg cartons on the walls to get good sound and they won’t do anything to keep outside sounds from getting in to your audio.
