Don is right, The XL-2 shows grain a lot more than other models of the camera. Shoot in Manual mode, turn the dial to “M” and like Don said, keep your gain at ‘0’ or below (if it’s bright enough outside)

When you say jumping around, could you be a little more specific?
If it’s only subtle jumping, it could be the autofocus trying to find the correct plan on which to focus. Make sure that’s off.
If the screen is just jumping all over the place and looks pixilated, sort of like a torn DV tape….I had a similar problem with an XL-1 a few years back, the solution was to send it to canon and have them fix it.
Best of luck

Oops, Olympics were in ’96.
Can you edit posts in this forum? I can’t seem to find the link that will let me do it.

Getting a foot in the door now is a good way to start, you could always intern as a editor’s assistant at a local news station to get your broadcast experience level up to scratch.
It’s always easier to get noticed by the network if you have connections at an affiliate. In my experience, a gig like you are looking for is 90% about connections and about 5% what you can do. That last 5% is luck.
I’ve met a lot of people here in Atlanta who got their start in broadcasting when the Olympics were here in ’97.
So I’d say, if you have any connections….try to use those first. If you don’t…try to make some.

I can’t speak about Quicken Home & Business, but I’m running Quickbooks Pro 2007 on my mac laptop, and I’ve never had any problems running it. I’ve used it through the last 2 versions of the OS and have not had any issues. (Intuit even released a patch for the program within a week of the new OS’s release, quite impressive)
I am able to export a save a file that is compatible with windows machines. This is how I get my info to my accountant when taxtime comes, and he’s had no problems w/ our files yet.
The learning curve is quite steep. And I find the invoice/estimate creation tedious and clunky.
Make sure you have a CPA to advise you when you need help or don’t know how to classify something. This will save you a lot of headaches come taxtime.
Quickbooks Pro does come with MANY features that a professional service business will never use. You might want to pick up a copy of the industry-specific version of Quickbooks. They make a version that is specifically for service businesses.
Best of luck.

I definitely agree with everyone who mentioned distance.
I’ve found that putting more distance between the talent and the prompter is the best solution to ‘soften’ lateral eye movement.
If your situation allows, get the prompter as far away from the talent as you can without causing them to strain to see the screen.
hope it helps!

Thanks again for all the great advice! I went to the rental house this morning with our camera, and got to use the mini35 adapter and run some tests with the different lenses they have. I couldn’t be happier! The mini35 setup was a little daunting at first, but it’s pretty easy to get the hang of once you’ve seen it done. Luckily our follow-focus fits perfectly, and our mattebox will fit (with some slight rigging on our end).
I decided to go with super speeds like you recommended, we’re renting 5 Zeiss Super Speeds: 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm. Got to test out the 85mm and the 18mm today and was really excited by the look of the image.
The only thing that I couldn’t really get my head around was the wheel to control the oscillating movement. I tweaked it a little and was unable to see much of a difference. Granted, the shot was pretty bland, not a lot of movement or action…What does the speed control on the adapter do? What does the oscillation do?
Thanks again!Trey Gregory

My understanding of 24f mode is that you can only capture it with a Canon camera that can record in that mode. So you’ll need the A1 or an XL H1 to get the footage onto your system. If you try to use a camera that can’t record in 24f, then the tape will be unreadable. It’s basically a Canon-only format.
Also, you mentioned that you would be loading the footage onto a PC, make sure the NLE software you are using supports 24f as well. I know FCP supports it, I’m not sure about adobe premiere. A year or so ago, Avid did not support it, but they may have released an update.Trey Gregory

Thanks so much for the comprehensive responses. Your setup looks awesome!
I can’t wait to get my hands on the mini35 adapter. I’ve even downloaded and printed out the user manual in anticipation and have read it front to back.
I’m actually going to the rental house on Monday with my camera to check everything and make sure they have all the proper adapters to hook it up to our H1. Planning to get a little hands-on time with it before picking it up for the shoot.
We do have a Petcroff follow focus that we use with our standard Canon lens, and a whip to go with it. Have you used one of those? Think it will do the trick? If not, they are fairly inexpensive to rent. Also, thanks for the head’s up on the balancing issue. We have a full set of rails from Zacuto, I am hoping that I can use those to get the weight distribution just right.
I do have 2 more questions for you. Is the ‘back focus’ something you need to check once before you start shooting, or do you need to check it any time you change out the lens you are using? Is it difficult to set this using the stock canon viewfinder in the field? Or would you recommend always doing it on an HD field monitor?
Thanks again!
