OK, easier version – all in the timeline
1. Drag 2 channel clip to sequence
2. Make this timeline clip 2 x mono
3. Disable both audio tracks for this primary timeline clip
4. Duplicate this clip below Primary – enable A1, pan left, +6dB Gain
5. Repeat – enable A2, pan right, +6dB Gain
6. You can now blade the ‘A1’ connected clip and enable A2 where you want M&E instead of Full Mix – without making edits on the A2 output, thus any level adjustments to match M&E and Full Mix will only affect the A1 output.

Be nice to be able to nest this but BEWARE – compounding this clip will NOT help you (try it and you’ll see why as soon as you try to swap audio tracks)

[Kannan Raghavan] ” My source is … two channels of audio, Ch 1-Full mix with English commentary, Ch 2-International sound. … My output has two audio tracks, again full mix and int’l. When I’m making the cuts, wherever I want to cut around the commentary, I cover the full mix track with the int’l sound from trk 2 to remove unwanted commentary around cuts. “
Hi Kannan
Would like to hear others views but the best way I can figure this can be done is as follows:
1. Right click your clip and ‘create multi cam clip’
2. Open in Angle editor (double click multi cam clip) and rename angle to ‘FULL MIX’
3. Ensure audio is set to 1 stereo pair and at a good level with Mix->Left and Fx->Right
4. Click tiny triangle next to first angles name and ‘add angle’
5. Alt drag 1st angle into 2nd angle track.
6. Rename that 2nd Angle ‘FX ONLY’
7. Select 2nd angle clip – go to audio inspector – change to 2 Mono tracks and turn off track 1
8. Go to Effects Browser | Audio and add a ‘Gain’ effect to the 2nd angle – adjust to add +6dB gain (this compensates for the 6dB pan law that FCPx has).
9. Cut this multi cam into your sequence.
10. Where you want to lose commentary, blade 2 points and then select the section. In the audio inspector for that section, deselect ‘full mix’ and select ‘m&e’
Sounds v. complicated, and you can simplify by just doing the blading in the timeline on the master clip, but once you have your multi cam setup it is quicker in the timeline.
You will have to rethink if, as is almost always the case, you need to adjust the level of the M&E to match the Full Mix – as this will cause mismatched edits in your edited M&E.

FCPx is not so different from other editors. We still mark in, mark out, insert, overwrite, ripple, lift, extract, trim, slip, slide, composite, reframe, title, dissolve, wipe, mask etc etc.
FCPx is built on the shoulders of the giants of the past, including FCP7, Avid, Softimage, Autoscreet, Quantel, Media100, Lightworks, Sony, Editware, GVG, Paltex, CMX and Datatron’s Tempo76 to name but a few I’ve been paid to edit on.
And in all those editors you can insert material at ‘zero’. (Even on a Sony MKS-8050 ‘linear’ editor we can make insert edits at the top of the EDL now.)
For me FCPx has some interesting features, which is why I keep looking at it. But I think it is fundamentally flawed in the lack of real world usage by professionals feeding back sane pros and cons. Instead there is a lot of noise about how ‘no-one understands it’ or ‘X Rocks’. I understand why that might occur in the FCPx or Not forum – but here I thought there would be more considered and informed responses.
That is how those other editors improved over time.

Here’s my ‘markers have idiosyncrasies’ video – with annotations & extras 😉

Have you tried exporting an xml before restart and reimporting?
I can’t reproduce this myself…. although I have had secondary story lines double up on me… also spinning beach ball and crashes when moving/copying clips in timeline… also markers have bugs (see separate post)
I think https://www.fcpx.tv seems to have the most comprehensive wish list – maybe he will host a bug list too.
All in all I can’t recommend any clients use this program yet, despite the promise it shows.

[Don Smith] “the designers have chosen to make timeline markers appear on the topmost clip”
Not true.
If I repeated the video, with the selected clip NOT in a secondary group, then the markers always mark on the selected clip.
The bug is that IF the selected clip is within a secondary group, THEN the marker is on the topmost clip
If I were to move any of the marked clips then the markers move with the clips (rather than being ‘timeline’ markers) – which is a GOOD thing.
You can see from the video that the markers CHANGE colour when a subsequent marker is added. Surely you’ll accept this is a bug?
I put this in the ‘techniques’ forum because I do not wish to bash FCPx but see it grow into a professional application. By all means promote the elements of the application that are well designed (magnetic timeline, audio associated by default etc) but you do it no favours by blindly accepting the parts that need improvement.

[Nikolas Bäurle] “In my opinion you don’t need in and out points or markers to edit music. I have never actually used them when editing music and i have to do that a lot. In Avid and FCP7 I prefer adding an edit at the first point, then i listen for the beat I want to continue with and then add an edit at the next point. Personally I think its faster.”
Er… how is adding an edit not just like adding a mark or marker?
Mark in…. Mark out…. Extract
Add edit… Add edit… Go back and select between edits… Extract
[Nikolas Bäurle] “In X I’ve mapped blading to cmnd + b, so It works just like adding an edit in Avid or FCP7.”
See my original post for why CMD-B isn’t working for me in a secondary.
[Nikolas Bäurle] “A lot of X newbies have problems with the magnetic timeline. “
I’m not really a ‘newbie’ as I gave 10.0.0 quite some time, and looked at 10.0.3 and 10.0.6 and now 10.1.
I’m freelance and work on a wide range of normal and not-normal NLEs. And LEs. Which had the original magnetic timeline 😉
I don’t have a problem with the magnetic timeline – it is one of the things I like about FCPx. But marking up and editing music is fundamental to editing professionally in just about everything but News so I was surprised to see a lack of chatter about it in my searches. Hence the question. And very few concrete answers so far as to a way to deal with it – but maybe I should’ve asked in the more incendiary forum…
[Nikolas Bäurle] “Trevor, don’t give up that quickly, just see it as a different way of doing things, once you figure out and get used to X you might not want to go back to traditional timelines.”
I work for broadcasters, production houses, OB companies. They choose the hardware/software for the most part. I bet I get considerably more work offers asking for Pr in the next 12 months than FCPx. And they will both be dwarfed by MC and (to a much lesser extent) FCP7.

Right, but I get away with it with every other bit of software AND these aren’t changes that I’m losing because they weren’t saved yet – it loses metadata that is present in an older backup.
