Lance, this is the source file I’m talking about.

I agree that the roles designation on export to multiple tracks works well – and is reflected in the audio configuration if exporting Quicktimes. Sadly I don’t think MXF has the ability to designate anything other than as a mono track – and thus you cannot recreate the audio configuration when importing the resultant MXF back into FCP. The choice is 16 mono or 8 stereo on a 16 track file.

    Noah, thanks for replying.

In the world of broadcast it is normal to have multiple different audio configurations.

    e.g. a live game will be covered 5.1 surround, with a 2.0 folddown. This produces 2 x 5.1 and 2 x 2.0 for full mix & international
a show to be edited might have multiple 5.1 sources (full mix, audience, fx), 2.0 (music, VT) and 1.0 (isolated mics)
a drama might well have a sound recorder with a 2.0 guide mix and multiple 2.0 and 1.0 sources (fx / isolated mics) and include MS material – this may well be correctly configured in FCX if the iXML data is correct, I haven’t tried that yet, but the data is often incorrect.

In tight turnaround (or low budget), the audio is finished in the NLE – no audio post.

There’s much to like about FCX – I give time to give it a serious look at every iteration. And it is getting closer (some stuff would be super useful, but it falls down in the audio department every time for me).

Sorry, should’ve been clearer. I want to send these to 4 live outputs (and maintain the capability of editing).

Delivery is baseband playout, rather than file, for a number of reasons.

[Frederico Cengarle] “so this means that if we have QT file that aleready have 5.1 mix (L, R, C, LFE, Ls and Rs) we can’t simply play it back in FCPX (it will rematirx it)?

I’m a perennial newbie on FCPX but, until a grown up comes along, here’s how I understand it:

Sequence (‘project’) can be 2.0 or 5.1 surround (CMD+J – project properties). That’s it. Anything outside those norms are mixed down to the project setting.

e.g. you can assign source tracks to be 7.1 surround – but that will be mixed down within a 5.1 surround.

BUT if you put a configure a source as 5.1, and put it into a 5.1 project, WITHOUT a pan effect added, then the tracks will come out as intended (do beware that the metering is Ls L C R Rs LFE – easier to identify if you bring up big audio meters with Shift + CMD + 8).

If you wanted to use the 6 channel (surround) project setting to achieve, say a normal deliverable of stereo full mix and m&e outputs, then you’d need to get into playing around with the surround panner. And you’d be in for a world of hurt…

I’ve been investigating editing with Roles and nesting my master sequence in a compound clip.

The compound clip is then the ‘submaster’ and can be edited and monitored in stereo.

The master sequence (containing the compound clip only) can be set to surround and used for final QC playback / export.

The roles of the compound clip within the master sequence can then be routed using the surround panner. Sadly this does some kind of ‘decoding’ for surround, so I wasn’t able to use it as a simple router.

Herein lies the problem, as I see it, in that Apple refuse to have an audio mixer in their NLE.

If anyone can point the way to achieve this deliverable on playback (i.e. send FX and MX roles to 2 x 2.0 outputs and DX role to 1st 2.0 output only) I’d love to hear. Roles/Lanes have got us closer…

    Hope that helps

October 2, 2016 at 8:20 am in reply to: Thoughts/Experience with Resolve Editor

Did you read the boring write up of Walters personal experiences with the programme?

He does have editing experience on quite a few NLEs so can review (for free for you) with some gravitas. He has a tendency to love the latest new thing, but that is an endearing trait if it means he takes the arrows for the rest of us.

I would say that Resolve has very few serious editors using it for cutting, or there would be a Resolve-‘for editors’ forum. Plenty of them using it for colour though.

That’s not to say that it isn’t ready for prime time yet – only that there is a lot invested (muscle memory, workflows, workarounds, clients) in an NLE and the case for putting time in for a switch (as Walter does regularly) is not always compelling.

That all said, I would also love to hear personal experiences of editors using R12.5 (particularly any more from Walter Biscardi)

  • If you want to edit whilst capturing then you need something like https://www.softron.tv/products/movierecorder

There’s more expensive options, that are used for broadcast TV, mainly revolving around https://evs.com/en

  • Locked off shot? You might be able to pull a difference key to get some of the way there.

I store compressor presets in Ppro, what are you talking about?”

Audio Track Mixer | FX | Amplitude & Compression | Dynamics – I don’t know anyway of storing a compressor setup once tweaked . I suspect you are talking about video file compression settings, but live in hope…

Dennis, I’m not sure that Adobe (whose products I own and use on about 30% of my work) should be shouting too loudly about audio capabilities. A search for ‘Premiere Pro audio drops out’ will lead to long standing problems that they have.

Also the inability to store a preset for something as basic as a compressor should be an embarrassment.

I’ve never used Vegas in anger but the audio side of it has always been streets ahead of Adobe/Apple/Avid/Blackmagic/Autodesk/Quantel etc. Good luck to Magix in their endeavours.

70% of my work is Avid ( Baselight & Fusion plug-ins are keeping that interesting). Still keeping an open mind on FCPX but no sign of it in the wild for me.

June 13, 2016 at 7:54 am in reply to: Fusion Connect for Avid

Fusion connect is seperate download from BM. Find it in their support/downloads area.

On OSX, with free version & without DnxIO, it does not open the comp when you ‘edit effect’. You have to navigate to and open that yoursel. Otherwise functionality seems to match paid version.

It does seem to require that you export files to a DI (DPX?) in order to have them be available in Fusion – it doesn’t access avid media direct. I’m pretty sure that when I looked at this a few years ago (before BM purchase) this extra step was not necessary.

There is mention of an ‘auto-render’ setting that automates this but I’ve yet to try that.
