    It worked! Hell yes!!!
I chose the Fill Left effect on one clip of one of my videos and that clip sounded fine from my smartphone, and the dialogue in the clip without the Fill Left effect couldn’t be heard.
When using the Fill Left effect, does this mean it’s not true stereo? When I play it back on my computer with stereo speakers, the dialogue does come through but sounds a bit different. On that same note, it sounds like you’re saying that the 1/8″ TS adapter will likely record in Mono, and if so I’ll have to change the settings in Premiere to split Mono into Stereo, right?
Thanks again. This is an enormous help!

Holy crap. That’s probably it because my XLR to 1/8″ does have the ring (thus TRS). I just found a good article explaining the differences between balanced and unbalanced connections. So… because the camera is recording the audio on the Left channel and a flipped version one the Right channel – these get canceled out when played from mono devices?
I still don’t know that I fully understand it, but it looks like we are certainly on the right track. I have been trying to figure this out for way too long!
    Thank you!
I’m going to try the fill left effect and also buy the TS cable if fill left fixes the issue.
    Thanks again!

OK. Great. I will give that a shot and let you know what I find out. And just for the sake of clarity – you mean to duplicate the stereo tracks and do a fill left on one and fill right on the other, correct?
    Thanks

I also wanted to say thanks for clearing up what phasing is for me. I really need to take an audio class, but for now I need to figure this stuff out as best I can without a class.

I use an Azden mic but am not sure of the model off the top of my head, and it plugs into the camera from XLR off the mic to 1/8″ to the camera. I’ll have to check the tip of the 1/8″ connector and take note of that.
I have tried duplicating the tracks that I get from the camera inside of Premiere and panning one all the way to the left and the other to the right – if that’s what you mean by your last suggestion. The same issues occurred regardless.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
It’s a phasing issue. The problem only happens when the videos are played through devices that are mono. This never happens on a stereo system (headphones are stereo just like a set of stereo speakers… so I never hear issues there).
I think you might be onto something with the mic, though. It could be that the shotgun records in mono and is fed to both channels. However, I rented another, higher end mic that ended up only on the left channel and it was plugged in the same way my other mic is to the same camera…

I actually solved the issue by updating my BIOS to the latest version. Now Premiere no longer freezes. I guess there is an issue with SSD’s on the SATA III ports.
All is taken care of. Thanks for your suggestions!

    No problem.
I changed the video card and didn’t have any problems for about 45 minutes… but then it froze.
I think maybe it’s somehow the audio? If I can find a sound card, I’ll try that. This is an extremely frustrating problem. I also ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic test which didn’t turn out any errors. So, all my hardware seems to check out OK thus far, all drivers are up to date, and I just reinstalled Windows and CS6… what the hell.
I looked in Premiere and the option under “Renderer” is greyed out, so I can’t make the suggested change. It does say that it’s set to software mode, but I can’t change it anyways….
One thing I find odd is that the HDD light on the front of the computer is always solid. I’ll try a new HDD and see what happens.
Also, I installed a CPU temperature monitoring program, but the temperature is way under anything that would make me think there’s an issue.
I’m going to leave the computer on over night with Premiere open in one of my projects and see if it freezes. It only seems to freeze during editing and playback.

Thanks for the reply. But as mentioned in my post I am not getting any bluescreen errors at all.
I decided to reinstall Windows, drivers and updates and not install any other software. I’m going to try to reinstall CS6 tonight, see if it works, then one-by-one install all my other software… we’ll see.

What did you mean by, “You could try see if turning off hardware mode for the Mercury Playback Engine in Premiere’s preferences stabilizes the program.” How do I do that?

    Thanks

Anyone… any ideas? I’ll post here if I find a solution. This is a bizarre problem. Has anyone run into it before? CS5 and CS6 Premiere both do the same thing…
