Apple nailed a lot of concepts in FCP X. Defaulting projects to Surround is still a little ahead of it’s time. 😉

December 5, 2011 at 6:18 pm in reply to: Pulling in text file as titling data – possible?

It is completely possible, it would just take a little work. FCPXML files are very easy to generate and modify as they are human readable text files. However, you will still need motion.

First create a Motion Title just like you want it. (This is needed because the current FCPXML format doesn’t retain text modifications in FCPX) Then save that as a Title for FCPX. Put that in a new project, set a duration and and export the project as a FCPXML.

Now using that as a template you could swap out the text (for example if you had Filemaker you could create an application that could create a whole bunch of titles in seconds). When you are done just drag the newly created FCPXML into FCP on the doc and it will create a new project with the titles that you could copy and paste into your project.

Here is a simple FCPXML to get you started:

Let me know if you need any more assistance.

[Luke Hale] “When I export the video I am only able to hear the VO out of one side”

So when you playback on the timeline it is stereo? And the audio meters show the VO in both the left and right channels?

Is your project set to stereo or surround?

Sounds like a bug, a very odd one. Trash your prefs again just to see if it resolves it. I’ll keep my eyes out for it.

Exactly. Of course if you were going to add effects to say 50 shots, that would be a little tedious. In that case I would do something like this:

    1. Create a new Role called “Video Effects Shots”.

    2. Command-click to select your clips in your timeline that need to be worked on. In the inspector assign the video role to “Video Effects Shots”. Then Command-C to copy the clips to the clipboard.

    3. Create a new project, call it “Export” and paste your clips. It doesn’t matter the video settings for that project.

    4. Duplicate the “Export” Project and choose “Duplicate Project + Used Clips Only” (3rd option).

    5. A new project AND event were created containing just the needed clips. Add effects and re-export the new clips in their entirety.

    6. Import your revised clips into a keyword collection such as “AE Renders” or whatever you like.

    7. Return to original timeline, not the “effect” project, (this step is optional) and In the timeline index, Command-2, select “Roles”, and click the “Video Effect Shots”. This will highlight all your effect shots that need replacement.

    8. In the timeline index now select clips, and then video down below. Now in the find field type “Video Effect Shots”. This will now only show the video clips that were assigned the Role “Video Effect Shots.”

    9. Navigate your timeline using the timeline index, and replace each shot as needed. You can select the shot by clicking on it in the timeline index and then hitting command-2 to change your focus to the timeline and your clip will be selected. This will go much faster than having to manually find each shot in the timeline.

As you go through the replace process on the clips, and I would highly recommend the last technique I showed on that video. Duplicate clip in timeline as audition, then right click and open timeline, use replace (Shift-R) on the video and the return to your timeline with Command-[

The nice thing about audition is that you can show the client/director the shot without the touchup. You can also create as many auditions as you need for subsequent versions of the effect shots.

I’ll put together a video walkthrough of this soon as I get a chance.

December 4, 2011 at 5:22 am in reply to: FCP X 4:3 to 16:9 Pillarbox effect

I just tried this and I see that the exported version is darker that what is seen in FCP X. Perhaps that is what is happening. See here: The one of the left is the QT export, on the right the FCP X interface:

I made that effect pretty quickly, it was more of a proof of concept. Perhaps it is something I did wrong. But the quick fix seems to be to bump up the opacity.

As an aside, HDV ingest from tape in FCP X is pretty fantastic, and for my workflow miles ahead of FCP 7. Create a “Camera Archive” for each HDV tape and it behaves just like file based footage.

Aaron “Its happened to me on expanded and collapsed audio, using the blade tool or through deleting a selected range”

I can see how both using a blade tool and deleting a selected range could do this, especially if you have expanded the audio on any of the clips you are removing. So I don’t know if this is actually a bug. Are you saying that you are not doing any L or J cuts and this is still happening?

December 2, 2011 at 7:30 pm in reply to: Hidden Roles – Gotcha on Export

Jeremy – btw thanks for probing into this.

[Jeremy Garchow] “It’s kind of like the track mute buttons in other softwares. You could mute a track, but it would still export all tracks. “

Exactly. Indeed my background is audio. If I was exporting raw tracks in a DAW then I would expect to see the option to export each track regardless of it being on mute.

However, if you export a MIX in a DAW it should (and does) obey your playback settings. I think anyone would assume than an export from FCP X, if it doesn’t specify, would be creating a MIX. Do you agree?

[Jeremy Garchow] “FCPX distinguishes disabled and dimmed differently. “

It looks like Apple doesn’t say alot about it in help. Only “on and off”

    Turn roles on or off

    1. In the Timeline Index, click the Roles button.
    2. In the Roles pane, select the checkboxes next to the roles or subroles you want to turn on. Deselect the checkboxes next to the roles or subroles you want to turn off.
Active roles appear in color in the Timeline, and inactive roles appear gray. If you turn off all video or all audio roles, the respective portion of audio-video clips also appears gray.
    3. To preview clips by role, play back your project. Only clips with active roles assigned play back.

I think Apple needs to make this cleaner and clearer in the export. We should have an option to “obey roles settings” for each Share option.

(As a side note this made me chuckle as I was thinking about he days of heavy ProTools work. Even though the computers were capable, when you did a “bounce to disk” you could only export in real time. I recall editing a half hour radio show and having to literally wait 30 minutes for the export to complete. So here I am complaining that a HD video, rendered and exported and took all of 20 minutes to complete. And on top of that was closed captioned in seconds by YouTube and played half way around the world just a few minutes later. I need to realize that we have some incredibly powerful tools at our disposal, and they are allowing us to work faster that we ever dreamed possible, and frankly I need to be thankful for that!)

December 2, 2011 at 6:12 pm in reply to: Hidden Roles – Gotcha on Export

[Jeremy Garchow] “I see, so you weren’t using Roles for export, really.”

Yes. Roles was used to disable and collapse items. We were planning on doing a multi-languge version of this video, so we will be using Roles for titles, etc. but for now just organization.

[Jeremy Garchow] “Just because a Role is dimmed doesn’t mean the export is going to disable it. Y”

The problem here is that playback in FCP X disabled the Role, while export didn’t obey that disabling.

[Jeremy Garchow] “Did the “section markers” and “other VO” get exported too or is it inconsistent like everything else?”

Actually those clips were individually disabled.
