  • You are exactly correct, I should have stated exactly what the Loop Bug did. Using the / key enables you to play back your selection while you are changing parameters.

Ben – yes, placeholders could help with a storyboard, but they are very basic and right now only have people standing and scenery.

FWIW we do storyboards with hand drawn panels or photos and type assembled in InDesign or other layout program. We then import that series of stills into our edit system, and add VO, music, etc. We can then show the client a preproduction version of a spot (I’m in advertising) that is pretty spot on. (pun intended). Then as the actual shooting comes in we inset them over the storyboards and we’ve got a very quickly assembled timeline, showing holes etc. This basic workflow is going to work in any NLE.

FCP X does has some specific pros and cons with storyboards:

    Pros:

    – FCP X magnetic timeline probably makes it the fastest NLE for do an assembly edit. eg. rearranging shots, adding SFX without concern of tracks, etc.
    – Ken burns effect will let you show camera movement very fast: pans, pushes, pulls and tilts (again faster and easier than any other NLE at the moment)
    – pre canned motion templates that could speed up your workflow. For example this: https://www.fcpeffects.com/products/action-storyboard. There are other tools, just google.
    – Roles could let you create a dialog stem and a “production comments” stem for simplified communication throughout production

    Cons:

    – difficult time getting your timeline to other software (not impossible but you have to jump through hoops)
    – Bug could effect title typing performance https://fcp.co/forum/4-final-cut-pro-x-fcpx/2063-very-slow-response-when-typing-in-titles

In the end, you can probably do storyboards, especially animatics, faster in FCP X that other NLEs, but if the timeline needs to be transferred to another NLE (not just a flattened movie) be sure to checkout your workflow first.

December 22, 2011 at 10:29 pm in reply to: Having Issues Importing From Camera (Tape)

I did have a dropped frame once in FCP X importing HDV. I fixed it by creating a camera archive first (in the FCP X Import from camera window). Hopefully it will resolve it.

If not try another FW cable, or another FW port on your mac.

Camera archives let you treat your tape based footage like it was a solid state device. It’s a very nice workflow.

This should work just find with FCP X regular syncing. Just select all your clips and sync. If not PluralEyes (currently in beta) can pull it off.

However, shooting a music is a little tricky, and syncing is probably the least of your worries. I haven’t done it myself, but I would recommend you conduct many tests to ensure you workflow is solid before brining in the talent.

Another issue you are going to have is with the nature of your subject. Since this looks like a program about art you don’t want to have to limit their pallet because of what you are trying to do in post.

You could simply paint your walls a color like tope and then do a color replacement (which should look better than building a virtual set) but you would still have the same problem with having to limit the pallet.

I just did a quick test to show you what is possible:

I would try to think about your set design to make it more flexible. Perhaps rig it up to use interchangeable panels on wheels, or go with a drape instead. Maybe rethink the set all together and have a black background to highlight the artwork.

Mark – you’re posts are always great and they crack me up. Glad to be tag-teaming with you.

One thing we both forgot to mention is your Event Browser needs to be in icon view for it to show just the range when using shift – f.

Actually your workflow sounds fine. I, as well as many of us here on the Cow have done many h264 projects without any problems. In fact h264 workflow is excellent in FCP X. So something else is up with what you are seeing. It is either your Mac, your OS, your project, the apps themselves (FCP X or Compressor).

So to help you troubleshoot, what kind of Mac do you have, what is your OS, what version are the Apps. Also when you say you are working directly with disk images, do you mean that you are note copying your files to FCP Events?

Also I’m still not clear if you have tried to “Share > Media Export” and then choose h264 as the destination codec without using compressor. Have you done that?

BTW. If you are in a hurry, you might want to give Apple a shout and they can troubleshoot this on the phone. Make sure you ask for Final Cut Pro support.

    Very odd. A few questions:

Where are you storing your events? On your networked RAID?

Are you working with transcoded or proxy footage by chance?

If you export media to h264 instead of prores, does that work?

There is not a way to do that automatically in FCP X at the moment. This has been discussed several times before here on this forum. It is worth a search. However depending on what you want here are some options off the top of my head:

1 – Use the “favorite” workflow, i.e. mark all your favorites first, before you bring them to the timeline.
2- If you are one for punishment, one by one, hit shift-f on each clip on your timeline to show it in your browser then either favorite it, or assign a keyword like “used”
3 – Duplicate a project with “used media only”. It will create a new event with just your used footage.
4 – Export a FCPXML of your project, and import. It will do the same as #3.
5 – Just start deleting clips from your event, you’ll see a warning if it is used or not. This is probably even more painful than #2.
6 – Console yourself with the fact that you couldn’t do this without media management in FCP 7 either.

This seems like a straightforward thing to implement in the programming, so request it (I have), although there would be a complication by the fact that media from one event could be used over many projects.
