  • QuickTips: Overcoming “loop bug” when making on the fly adjustments in FCP X

FCP X has a range (in and out point) looping feature that should make on the fly parameter adjustments easy. But currently FCP X has a bug that disables the looping whenever a parameter adjustment is made, which was a big disappointment for many of us hoping for an improved audio sweetening workflow.

However, after randomly pressing keys yesterday, it turns out the Play Selection keyboard shortcut of slash “/”, works without the timeline being active and does playback the range letting you make adjustments. Wahoo! It’s kind of a manually looping, but more often than not I would prefer it over automatic looping. (Of course it will be good when Apple fixes that bug).

Also, real time parameter adjustments are not limited to just audio. Any adjustment can be made in the inspector in real time. Scaling, Position, Rotation, Color Correction, enabling filters, etc.

The play selection key will work for either a range selection or a clip selection.

Some interesting ways to make a range selection WITHOUT moving the playhead:

    – Hover over a clip with the mouse and press X
    – Hold down R to temporarily change to the range tool (or tap to change) and click a clip to make the selection.

Here are some ways to select clips, again without moving the playhead:

    – Hovering over it with the mouse and pressing C.
    – Holding down option and clicking on the clip
    – Holding down option while drawing a marquee around clips

    Enjoy!

    All excellent advice.

You can also change the audio level control in the inspector in real time, giving you a mixer like feel with the slider (with keyframes).

I find / doesn’t work if you make a parameter adjustment. Instead of stopping at the end of the selection playback just keeps going. / works if you don’t touch any parameters.

    All the best,

    Tom

You are exactly correct, I should have stated exactly what the Loop Bug did. Using the / key enables you to play back your selection while you are changing parameters.
