If you are under deadline, I would definitely give Apple a call. They probably have ways of helping.
My thought is that you might have a corrupted clip in that event. To test it quit FCP, move all projects and events to disabled and then goto your problem event and put an X in front of the “Original Media”, “Transcoded Media” and “Render Files”. Don’t worry this is harmless, it is just hiding those from FCP X.
Now see if the event will load. If it does, one of those folders has a corrupt file in it. To troubleshoot go one by one and remove the X (of course only doing that while FCP X is quit).
If that doesn’t work, post back.

Jim,
I haven’t seen any problems with overlapping regions on my end. I would duplicate that clip, clear all the keywords from it and then try to reapply the keywords and see if it still happens.
Also, while I love to hear about the problems, report them directly to the FCP team where they will be logged and addressed.

MacPro’s are very long lasting. My 2006 Mac Pro (yeah 6 year old box) that I use every day runs great.
However, I think I have to seriously consider why exactly I need one. Here is what I have on my box:
2 Optical Drives
1 TB Internal Drive for startup
1 TB Internal Drive for Virtual Machines (Windows)
1 eSata card connected to a 6TB RAID
1 eSata card connected to external drive
1 Matrox MX02 – driving 13″ CRT, and 40″ LCD
1 Radeon 5770 driving 30″ cinema display and 24″ dell
13 GB RAMEvery one of those things (save the video card) can be replaced by devices on a tiny Thunderbolt cable. Thunderbolt is staggering technology.
I’ve bought an original Mac in 1984, and aside from the Scully years, the track record for innovation that Apple has put in the Mac is amazing. I have every confidence that what they are making now (i.e. the new Mac Pro or whatever it is called) will be ahead of its time and meet my needs quite well.
I have every respect for Microsoft, but they just don’t make things that ignite your passion. I think as creatives we look at Apple and see them as fellow creatives and are excited about the products they make.
However, I think we are in a signifigant transition right now. The technology to replace the big towers is here, but for Mac based creative professionals we have an aging Mac Pro on one side but a non-upgradable iMac on the other. I think Apple is going to make an in-between box (that is without a built in display) that gives us some decent upgradability but without the boat anchor.
If my shops Mac Pro were all stolen today, I would replace them with iMacs and I don’t think we would miss a beat. Then next year I would see what the new professional Mac has to offer, which will probably be pretty fantastic. So I’m hopeful, and even looking forward to it. 🙂

Ouch.
My first thought is it is a corrupted media file, or render file. I would dupe the project without render files and then see if the dupe opens. If that doesn’t work, export the duped project as a FCPXML and reimport (note you’ll lose some key framing data when doing that, but it will tell you if you have a corrupt timeline or a corrupt media.)

Major bummer. Yes i have seen this with a fellow in Europe with 10.0.1. Are the blank clips ones that you are using or did they just appear?
Don’t give up on FCP X yet. Unfortunately corruption is a part of life (I’ve lost all sorts of Final Cut, After Effects, and InDesign files over the years). I personally haven’t had any corrupt events or projects in FCP X, so know that there is hope here.

Based on what is happening with your blank clips I would try this:
1- Export your event as an FCPXML and then reimport. I have seen doing that fix a lot of problems. If that doesn’t remove the blank entries at first, you might even want to look at the XML file to see if you see any blank entries. (However, if you are using compound clips to edit some of the info might be lost (like key framing) so in then that might be a problem and you’ll want instead to do #2.
2 – Copy to a new event by option-dragging your clips to a new event. Everything will be retained in your new event except folders (at least in my tests). Be sure to test with a few clips first before you drag the whole thing.
After you do #1 or #2, disable your old corrupted event and upon the next launch FCP X should find all the footage. You might need to change the event references for the projects.
3 -Now if you are still stuck after trying #1 or #2, I would give Apple a call. It will take some time and they can help.
4 – if you are still stuck after 1, 2, and 3, I’ll be glad to help as best I can. We could screen share or whatever.

So I noticed you said you didn’t like mixing audio in FCP X compared to FCP 7. I have had the opposite experience. I would never satisfied with a mix I did in 7, I always had to sent to ProTools or SoundTrack Pro. In FCP X, I’ve been very satisfied with the results. In fact the last spot I did I sent my draft mix to my audio engineer so he could get some ideas on how he would improve upon it and he said it sounded excellent. (this isn’t meant to toot my own horn, but to say that for a guy comfortable with ProTools and SoundTrack I was able to make a decent mix in FCP X).
With that said there is HUGE room for improvement, and I hope Apple gives us a much better mixing experience soon.
So I’m curious what you didn’t like. Could you expound on it?

BTW. I realized also that you could just use the global “Relink Project Media” once you get the WAV files tweaked instead of having to put them in a new angle and then having to change all the angles.

From my experience, speeding up FCP X seems all about the GPU. I have a rather inexpensive 5770 in my 2006 MacPro and frankly it is working just dandy in FCP X.
