  • Corrupt Events

Posted by Jim Waterwash on June 19, 2012 at 4:54 pm

I’m trying to diagnose why my FCPX system is so slow and why Projects are becoming corrupt and I suspect that it is because my event is corrupt. I had created this event back in January and now when I look at it, it has 12 clips in the event that show “null”.

Has anyone ever seen such a thing within their events?

When I recently loaded the event into FCPX (I use Event Manager X) it told me that it had to upgrade the event for the new version of FCPX. It’s been 2 or 3 minor versions since January. I am concerned that the reformatting process that FCPX did on the existing Event is responsible for the corruption. These “null” entries seen within the image, are appearing on 2 separate events. In one of them, I just deleted them, but I still am having problems where projects created with the event, are slow and getting corrupt.

I have 2 more Events that I am afraid to unhide from FCPX, in fear that it will corrupt them as well. I’m already a week behind on this project and am thinking of giving up on FCPX. Obviously this will set me back another week. Because it’s happening with 2 separate events, I’ve so far avoided spending $108 on diskwarrior.

I’m just curious if others have run into these “null” entries or have had issues with upgrading event databases. Also, ss there any application that can be run to verify the integrity of an Events database?

    Jim,

Major bummer. Yes i have seen this with a fellow in Europe with 10.0.1. Are the blank clips ones that you are using or did they just appear?

Don’t give up on FCP X yet. Unfortunately corruption is a part of life (I’ve lost all sorts of Final Cut, After Effects, and InDesign files over the years). I personally haven’t had any corrupt events or projects in FCP X, so know that there is hope here.

So here is a page that might be helpful:

    https://fcpx.tv/troubleshooting.html

Based on what is happening with your blank clips I would try this:

1- Export your event as an FCPXML and then reimport. I have seen doing that fix a lot of problems. If that doesn’t remove the blank entries at first, you might even want to look at the XML file to see if you see any blank entries. (However, if you are using compound clips to edit some of the info might be lost (like key framing) so in then that might be a problem and you’ll want instead to do #2.

2 – Copy to a new event by option-dragging your clips to a new event. Everything will be retained in your new event except folders (at least in my tests). Be sure to test with a few clips first before you drag the whole thing.

After you do #1 or #2, disable your old corrupted event and upon the next launch FCP X should find all the footage. You might need to change the event references for the projects.

3 -Now if you are still stuck after trying #1 or #2, I would give Apple a call. It will take some time and they can help.

4 – if you are still stuck after 1, 2, and 3, I’ll be glad to help as best I can. We could screen share or whatever.

    Hang in there.

It worked! Thanks for your help.

Step #1 (exporting and reimporting the event’s xml seems to have done it.

I can now just select all my keywords and add them to a new project all at once. Before, when I would select a single keyword segment, after adding one to a project, it would take a minute or two of spinning beach balls before I could even use FCPX. Selecting more then about 3 and adding them would hang FCPX.

    Thanks again.

So while those empty entries within my events was a suspect cause for some of my problems, I believe there is most probably a bug involving Event Keywords that have overlapping regions.

I have a region named “interview” within my event, whose region contains multiple keywords defining sub regions. I believe this is what is confusing FCPX.

While it is possible for me to now select all the keywords in the event browser’s list view and add them to a project, the resulting keywords that make it into the project are a bit scrambled around these overlapping keywords. This may be the cause for the project still taking over a minute to load (and I have the events and projects on an SSD now).

I just wanted to provide more details so the bug can be verified, avoided, or maybe even fixed..

    Jim,

I haven’t seen any problems with overlapping regions on my end. I would duplicate that clip, clear all the keywords from it and then try to reapply the keywords and see if it still happens.

Also, while I love to hear about the problems, report them directly to the FCP team where they will be logged and addressed.

    https://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html

The best way to do that is find a way to reproduce it and then report it with details like this:

    1. Summary of issues
    2. Steps to reproduce the issue
    3. Expected Results/Actual Results
    4. Any additional details.

I’ve been using FCPX since 10.0 and its been smooth sailing til now. I’m getting hammered. Something is corrupted and I’ve narrowed it down to two projects I have in one event. I’m using event manager and preferences manager for FCPX 10.04 and my Final cut will only launch and immediately crash after all windows appear. Been happening since yesterday. I’ve copied event & project files, ken stone fcpx tips, etc. nothing. And i’m on a deadline. Some of the error code is pasted below. There has to be some type of way to get these project (timelines) back and preventing them from causing FCPX to crash/quit.

    Ted,

If you are under deadline, I would definitely give Apple a call. They probably have ways of helping.

My thought is that you might have a corrupted clip in that event. To test it quit FCP, move all projects and events to disabled and then goto your problem event and put an X in front of the “Original Media”, “Transcoded Media” and “Render Files”. Don’t worry this is harmless, it is just hiding those from FCP X.

Now see if the event will load. If it does, one of those folders has a corrupt file in it. To troubleshoot go one by one and remove the X (of course only doing that while FCP X is quit).

If that doesn’t work, post back.
