Ahh I got it. I didn’t understand that the IMX Spec is only for SD material, see here (the FCP 7 manual coincidently):
And from the FCP X Glossary “IMX A standard-definition (SD), all-I-frame MPEG-2 format stored on tape, XDCAM optical disc, or disk drive. Some IMX decks can play back and convert formats such as Digital Betacam, Betacam SX, and Betacam SP to IMX. The data rate of IMX can be set to 30, 40, or 50 Mbps.”
Therefore you have to create a SD project at NTSC 720×486 or PAL 720×576 (or anamorphic versions of those) to SEE it as an export option. If you start with a HD project, you should make it a compound clip and then paste it into an SD project to see down convert.
So correct me if I am wrong but it looks to me that FCP X already does all you need it to do by selecting roles in Share > Export.
And the resulting file with 4 tracks of audio just as specified.
This is in fact what you were trying to do, correct?

I just realized that I got an app called FolderWatch a while ago that lets you setup some schedules for automatically syncing folders, and it works well for this use.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/folderwatch/id408224368?mt=12
I just set it up so that the main edit machine (that would be mine) would sync to a file server and then all the edit machines (I had to setup one at a time unfortunately) to sync with that “master” Motion Templates folder.
Works like a charm!

Ahh I see your conundrum now. The compressor pass thought is a good workaround. Interesting. I still can’t get the IMX codec option to show up in FCP X.
I would absolutely report this as a request to Apple. https://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html

Currently FCP X will not modify original media files, ever, except changing timecode. Unlike FCP 7 you can’t write back the name on the source media.
In my workflow I have really not found this to be a problem as long as I am staying in FCP X. However, once I need to grab a clip for After Effects, or share with someone else my files, it can be a bit of an issue. Unfortunately FCP X isn’t a renaming and file organization utility like FCP 7 was.
If you need to change the names of your source, I would recommend that you do that before you import (perhaps in FCP 7!)
However, if you are going to rename the source after import into FCP X, be super careful doing it after you have imported as you could quickly loose links to all your media especially if you are using “Copy to Final Cut Event”. You can rename without loosing links if you are using simlinks (which is what is created when you don’t Copy to Final Cut Event), but you could quickly get into problems.
PS. Be sure to put in a feature request to Apple regarding renaming and rewriting metadata back to the original files. They really do read all those feedbacks.

Hey Andy,
One other tip i just found out for groups is that if you are using roles, those roles export settings can also be shared between editors. They are in Moves/Final Cut Events/Export Presets.
I’m still looking for a Motion Template “Sync” app of some kind that will keep all my edit machines synced up.

Fabrizio,
I plead my ignorance, how did you export IMX out of Compressor? Also where is the IMX preset in FCP?

Welcome aboard. You can accomplish that with Roles in FCP X. You’ll assign a “Role” for your different elements, and then create a Role export present (stored in the root of your events folder) to do what you like.
Here is the timeline, with viewing roles:
Here is what your Role settings will look like for export:
(now obviously you can name and arrange roles as you like, this was just a quick example.)
Since you are just getting started, I would highly recommend that you get some training that covers the basics for FCP X even though you are an experienced editor, it will be well worth the few dollars you’ll spend. Ripple Training’s is excellent and so is Larry Jordan’s training. It will help you get up to speed quickly on the methodology of FCP X, which can at some times see foreign to experienced editors.

Are you duplicating within FCP or are you doing this at the Finder level?

So if you grab the raw audio, do the waveforms display correctly? Also do you always hear audio, even when the waveform is not drawing correctly?
Perhaps the audio file itself is somehow corrupted? or something that FCP is having a hard time with.
Weird. I ended almost everything multcam and have waveforms disappear for multi cam clips at certain zoom levels, but a relaunch of FCP would resolve it. Sometime using the zoom slider on the timeline would also “jar” something loose and they would display again.
Make sure you report this to Apple, I would send them a link to your screen shot too.

If you relaunch FCP X, does that help?
