We do projects like this very often. In fact a couple of months ago I did a project with the same specs as yours. 7D footage. 10-12 minute clips. 75 subjects for a total of about 50 hours of footage. Ben Consoli actually uses the same technique that we do for marking and editing interviews in FCP X:
Unlike this technique we don’t record everything verbatim in our favorites. And we review interviews at 2x speed (it takes some getting used to, but if you concentrate your brain can handle it.) We therefore are able to typically log in real time.

That still seems a bit long to me. What video card do you have in your MacPro? What about your drive setup. Where are you storing your media?

A few hours to render a 4 minute project? That sounds like a huge amount of time. Even 12 minutes to export sounds too long. I worked on a feature length movie in the fall on an older 2006 MacPro. 1080p prores footage, and every one of the 2000 clips were color corrected, many stabilized, with a cinema widescreen matt over all of it and it took about 3 hrs to render the complete 1.5 hr film.
What kind of effects specifically do you have in use? What kind of titles?
I think something is up with your system, even though it is new.
In contrast I am getting radially different performance on on a small project today. 1080p. Canon 7D footage, not transcoded, Titles throughout, most clips with color corrections, a bunch of CoreMelt Lock & Load on clips. I didn’t render before sharing. Total timeline is 6:42. I just exported a 720p Youtube Version and it took a little over 6 minutes to export. I’m on a 27″ iMac, 24GB Ram, GeForce 680MX 2048 MB
Why don’t you duplicate your project without render files, and then export without rendering. See what kind of times you get.

Something is definitely up. FCP X should share in a few minutes not hours. I typically see 1x or .5x export times.
Delete your render files by choosing File > Delete Event Render Files or File > Delete Project Render Files. I would go ahead and delete them all.
If that doesn’t make your render take just a couple of minutes my next thought would be a corrupted clip or title.
Copy some of your clips to a new timeline and try exporting. See if you can isolate the trouble.

Frankly I never thought of it. However for short timelines (I work in advertising) I rarely edit in projects. Mostly in compound clips.
Also, I’m in the habit of making extensive project notes inside compound clips. For example a todo list or jot down some ideas on how I’m going to organize a project. If it is in a compound clip I can throw it up on my client monitor so everyone can see. I can ever dress up my notes with my company logo, etc. it makes my editing session feel that much more professional, which also tends to make me work more wholeheartedly.
We also have other job related documents that I will scan as a PDF and drop in my notes compound clip. The possibilities are endless!

Exactly. It was something I started a while back. I was trying to figure out a way to create a keyword template that I could import as needed. I just never finished it. But thanks for mentioning it as I just did. I’ll post another QuickTip here to the forums.

Make the title a compund clip, option-g, then you can retime.

Actually filmstrip displays somewhat the middle portion of the clip when “Viewing All”. You can always make the filmstrip show more than a single frame. Perhaps that would help.
I don’t know of a way to change the “poster frame” so to speak in FCP X.
