Here’s another sobering thought about buying one of the new iMacs:

Thanks Jerry–if you have any feedback, we can incorporate it into the next revision.

Kim,
That is a great point!
This is the kind of feedback from end users that Apple needs to hear:
https://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html
Please take a minute to fill out that feedback form regarding the potential for releasing FCPX on the App Store. I agree with you that it doesn’t work for a lot of users in your situation and disc (or thumb drive) distribution is still a very valid way to get software out to a certain contingent of FCP users.

MK,
Hoping that Apple comes up with something like this. My Apple rep mentioned it was something that he had specifically brought to the attention of the “powers that be” but the final decision was obviously to be made much higher up the chain of command.

Thanks Craig.
I think if software goes the App Store route, we’d look at replacing that revenue stream with something else. It wasn’t even a thought when they started selling apps on the phones that way, but it slowly crept into mind that was where the market was headed when people started to talk about a similar model for OS X software.
I can’t fault anyone for pushing software distribution towards a 100% electronic model because it makes so much sense on so many levels (increasing speed of delivery, reducing paper waste, etc…) Our business model will have to change a little, but you still can’t download hardware!

Andy,
SSD’s won’t speed up the rendering process unless you are laying off massive files like DPX or TIFF files that have a massive Mb size per frame.
You should use a single SSD for the boot/app drive and put more of the $$$ into CPU, graphics card, and RAM. This will become increasingly important when FCPX comes out since it will maximize CPU performance with Grand Central Dispatch, gfx with OpenCL, and RAM via the new 64-bit code.

Brad,
No part of the Apple Xserve RAID can be upgraded. The sleds have proprietary firmware on the drives and the controllers were never speed bumped.
Don’t waste the money on that old tech…

Gene,
Go for the ATI card. Its a pretty inexpensive way to get the most GPU horsepower possible for your system.
Reading your post, it looks like you get a lot of use out of your systems before moving on to a new one. In that case, you might want to consider an 8-core 2.26 ghz. On the RAM front, moving from 6 Gb to 12 Gb is pretty cheap with an 8-core–only about $300.

Carlos,
You might want to try the new version of iTunes released today if that is the only app giving you problems.

Confirm you have the single Quad Core and not the dual? The bummer about that machine is Apple only officially supports up to 8Gb of RAM on that one.
With an 8-core, you could levy up to 32 GB of RAM.
One note on RAM with all these machines–you’ll get best results by installing RAM configurations that are optimized to take advantage of three memory channels. That means its no longer 4, 8, or 16 that are prime–but rather 6, 12, or 24 GB.
6x1GB for 6GB
6x2GB for 12GB
6x4GB for 24GBIf you install the max RAM of 32 Gb, your system actually loses the ability to address three memory channels and decreases to two.
