[greg janza] “vo’s for the most part have been added to a long list of editing devices that audiences have tired of. Dissolves, wipes, flying boxes, animated text and many other items just don’t make the cut anymore and for my money, we’re all better off.”

hmmmmm, I don’t know about that. I think a lot of people would love to have Morgan Freeman VO their production. Maybe it depends on who’s VO it is.

I see animated text every time I watch Netflix.

That’s all this is. A straight up copy. Netflix is pretty popular.

The only flying boxes I see are basically every sporting event I work on. Not only do they fly on but they have to have their sound effect also. Then they flip to the sponsor and back to the score and then to the next sponsor. flip flop flip whoosh zoosh boom bang.

You put a lot of effort into it so I wanted to at least share my thoughts.

I enjoy watching videos like that, thanks again.

Thanks for putting together the video Andy.

    Just a couple of points.

Those canned templates in X that you used can be just a jumping off point that you change a bit to fit the project you’re working on by simply opening in Motion (you pointed this out yourself) or as is or anything in the middle.

Then your new templates are there for you in X for the next you want them.

That can cut some of your time in half but Apple is not making you use those. Start from scratch if you want.

A third party 3D program is not going to work as seamlessly with X as Motion so I personally don’t see the need for it.

You said that some people don’t have Motion. It’s only a onetime cost of 50 bucks so if people don’t have it they just don’t want it and that’s up to them. They are designed to be used together so that’s how I use them.

When talking about the mask sample video you said that the creator “HAD to pay into” He CHOSE to pay into those. Like you said, he likely could have made all of those himself but didn’t want to spend that much time doing it.

Time is money and everyone has to weigh that.

As I have said before, unless you created the NLE you are working on yourself you are using the work of other people. It just depends on how far you want to take that line of thinking.

I was hoping to see you animate the Chevy logo in Pr to compare the time, cost and look to the one Charlie did.

I think the titling tool is quite capable in Pr I just personally prefer to work with titles directly in the canvas like X does instead of in that secondary window over a still image that they have been doing for sometime.

That’s just a personal taste thing for me.

Does it also apply to Pr’s philosophy since they just put out their canned titles?

Or SONY and PANASONIC with their full auto camera modes? Remember, anything Apple is doing, somebody else always did it first so it couldn’t be them.

As far as X goes, I’m cutting a multi-cam project right now in X. I didn’t miss jamming timecode in the field or syncing the shots up manually myself. Cutting MC in X is fast and easy but TC is still there if you want it.

Will some young person ask me in the future “What is jamming TC?” Maybe, but I don’t care.

His article compares a product that has a lot less than a more expensive product that can do more.

The problem with the comparison is, X doesn’t have a lot less than more expensive models it’s competing with.

There will always be people that want to do less work, and that will always open a market for people who will.

Well, that right there is a great example of a time usage comparison.

I would not like selecting each one of those fonts one by one to see them rather than just hovering over them.

  • What we are doing is discussing the pros and cons of these NLEs in order to give people who come to the forum more information about the products that they might no know.

I learned about X by reading information online about it that I previously didn’t know and then decided to try it out.

I find that when I show people the tools in X most times they like it a lot.

If people are happy with whichever app they choose I’m happy for them. I think all of these programs are very nice.

[greg janza] ” these nonsensical threads debating Apple vs the rest of the world “

I would say coming to an Apple “Debate Forum” and asking why people are debating in it is more nonsensical then the debate inside the “Debate Forum”. But then you and I would have to “Debate” that Greg : )

Getting back closer to the topic of the thread (but still not quite there) I was watching a demo of the new Essential Graphics panel and it looked as though to update a font you have to “select” the fonts in the column to see what it looks like instead of just hovering over it and seeing it in X

    Is that correct?

[andy patterson] “Charlie had to use plugins and workarounds for the Chevy Logo”

I don’t know what he used, but it certainly seemed to be faster than it’s taking you to put your video up.

  • [Michael Gissing] “Clearly Apple thought so too so they developed roles and lanes to try and put back in the power of track and bussing processing.”

I like the no clip collisions in X but what I like as much if not more are those connected clips. That always seems to get lost when folks talk about the X timeline.

Now after adding “Lanes” (for whatever reason they did it) the X timeline has the best of both words.
The speed of swapping groups of shots, no coalitions , and the organization of tracks when you want it.

The upside for Apple having their timeline so different is that they have that group to themselves, and the track NLE’s have to fight amongst themselves for the same people who want tracks.

  • [Mark Smith] “Thomas edits too damn fast . He zips through one thing, I’m still absorbing that one thing and he’s 5 edits down the road by the time I understand what he explained 30 seconds ago.”

Yes, his whole focus is set on showing that he can work faster in “X” then other apps. He would know his demo in another app also but still could not work as fast. I guess he figures there are already demos that go into detail online.

“I’m not having to deal with string-outs”. He doesn’t want to do those or “Pancaking”.

Not using those techniques doesn’t seem to be stifling his talent or ability to land work. Nothing wrong with those, they just have little to do with why he, and others chose that app.
