December 1, 2011 at 2:21 pm in reply to: Apple Insider says FCP 8 was DONE when they killed it? WOW.Bill, I think you also have to factor in one thing……….the camera.
While you can get X for 300 bucks (still a lot for many people) you still need a good camera.
They are not going to drop 10K on an EX 1 to do one dog grooming video a year.
Even if they get a Canon D it’s over 2 k. Just not cost effective yet.
Also they don’t know how to shoot and don’t want to. Too much work for them to rent lights and sound.
Even Ad agencies who now cut themselves don’t want to shoot because they know how much work it is.
Try flying your stedi cam on a windy day and making it look smooth take after take.
They don’t want no parts of it : )It’s the shooting Bill.
If you shoot crap it doesn’t matter what you have to cut it with.
Most people want it to look good but at a cost they can afford.

November 27, 2011 at 11:01 am in reply to: FCPX performance issue – the perils of compound clipsWhat I have seen in my market is a flow of people who got let go at the local stations because they want as few humans working there as possible.
These folks have skills because they have been cutting and shooting for last 20 years.
Can’t blame them for jumping into the freelance market. Beats a lot of other jobs.

I don’t mean this as a negative or disrespectful comment either but being an editor makes you a better shooter because you know what shots you need.
A good editor knows that great footage make the project. If you start with crap it will be crap in the end.
So yeah, we baffle each other brother.

I was working on FC 6, and I don’t have “normal jobs”.
I could be on anything from sports to corporate to a Doc I just started shooting.
For sports it’s typically the talent’s VO, nats (bat crack) the call of the game, music and maybe player VO
That under player highlights and graphics
What kind of projects do you work on?

I’m friends with many of the still guys in my town. I have know them for years (we cover all the same events) and I speak with them about tech stuff a lot.
When they were first told to shoot video a lot of them hated it. It just wasn’t what they wanted to do.
I remember them sulking about it like it was yesterday.
They were forced into it.
These guys (my friends) don’t know anything about Avid
They are super Mac heads so they have used Imovie.
I see them just going right into X
Remember, they just want to get it done. It’s not their passion like us. They are going to go with the easiest product they know.
Did you see the Cain video? They didn’t put any titles on that stuff. Just put it up.
I could give them a demo on X and I would have them inside of 10 secs

Thanks Bill.
You make some good points man…
“It’s a glimpse into a world where video editing skills are rapidly becoming GENERAL business skills – not specialist talents as they used to be.”
I liked it better when we had it all to ourselves : )
My concern was that our wages would be driven down by everybody and their mama trying to do what we do.
Guys on this board are smart and I know have talent and anybody that wants it done right is gonna come get us. No mater what we are cutting on : )

“Clearly all the time invested in FCP 1-7 and the FCS suite is now completely thrown out the window. Someone with FCP 7 chops and someone with no previous NLE chops is just about at the same level. If you want to leverage what you already know, then FCP X is the wrong tool.”
You completely nailed this!!!
It ticked me off also brother.
If I didn’t like so many things it could do I would have thrown it out the window.
Your Motion skills will transfer just fine.
Stuff is moving so fast in so many directions it’s hard to keep track.
