Bill there a few things you’ve mention I’m still a little hazy about.
Bill: YouTube and Vimeo are direct options
I’ve played around with this a few times now, however the thing I don’t like, is there’s no upload monitor when it begins uploading to YouTube or Vimeo.
The other was that it completely ties up FCPX not allowing me to do anything else.
Bill: Which means you can work on, revise, publish, and re-publish projects and revisions in a live and dynamic way – rather than getting everything “perfect” before exiting your NLE to upload your work.
Bill I’m a little confused with this part. When you upload to YouTube or Vimeo via FCPX, it’s unusable till this finishes?
Bill: Share “Media Browser” function to store copies of your current edit in the Shariing folder that lives in the root folder where you have X keep your Project and Event files. This travels with your project and keeps a “live” copy of your current master no matter whether your root clips are on-line or offline.
Interesting… I’ll have to play around with this
Bill: the Email option in the sharing menu is amazing for short projects you want someone to take a quick look at. It’s subject to email system limits on the size of attachments
Ah yes… thought so. I’m working on testimonials for a website and was thinking this would have come in really handy.

Bill in your post you mention
When you’re in the Share Menu, take a look at the direct email and direct posting options. I’m rapidly migrating my client review workflow to these rather than sending cut off files via FTP and/or Server services like YouSendIt – YMMV.
Ok you really got my attention with this. How does this all work? I’m forever exporting and uploading to my YouTube account for clients to review, but of this is a easier option, please do tell :-)))

I had this same problem when I updated .3 to .4, however I decided to re-format my OS (don’t ask) and downloaded a fresh 10.0.4 directly from the app store.
Problem is now gone..!
Try this for curiosity, create a new user account, open applications, click on FCPX & allow it to install, then import some material and try batch renaming.
Let’s us know how you go?

Bill I totally understand and respect what Apple have done, and I’m not trying to change the intended workflow for FCPX.
It was a very unusual circumstance needing to change the clips in my timeline, and easily did so by manually renaming. My problem was in a perfect scenario (and it’s not always perfect), I’d just rename my clips (with Adobe Bridge) prior importing into FCPX. But what if an edit changes course and filenames need changing, and the timeline has already been built…! one would hate to be in FCPX 🙁
Anyway I’m not arguing my point, just saying what if….?

Jeremy I recently experienced this same problem where after adding all the needed shots on my primary storyline, I realized I needed to change a few of the clips names.
Unfortunately I too was unpleasantly surprised this couldn’t be done, so now I try make sure I pre-plan and batch change the media names prior importing.
If its not a large batch, you can always change the clips name in the event browser, then highlighting the clip in your timeline, choose show in event browser, and do a replace insert.. I know it’s tedious, but unfortunately there arnt many choices right now.

It would be amazing to be able to use the key commands to create new collections as I go
Theres definitely something wrong with your FCPX.
If you click on a clip in your event, press Command+K and add a keyword to that clip, providing you haven’t manually added that keyword as a keyword collection in your event, then FCPX should automatically create a keyword collection for you?
Works perfectly fine on my end….

A. key work collections don’t show up under my event
Usually what causes this is the filter option. But looking at your screen grab, it seems to be set on the right setting.
Sounds like FCPX is having a hissy fit on you, I’d try trashing your preferences and see if that helps.
Best way to do that is download Preference Manager then report back 😉

Thoreau, Bill’s suggestion is the “proper” way Apple intended FCPX to be used, however I believe boundarys are made to be broken.
When you’ve edited a particular way for 15 years, old habits die hard.
The suggestion I made previously might seem long winded, but when you edit of a laptop and attempt skimming through a 40min clip in the event browser, you’ll begin looking for alternative solutions to speed up your process.
Regarding your question: when make an edit on the timeline, then ‘right click locate it’, does just that range show up in the event browser, or the whole clip?
Absolutely, so if you have a 40min clip in the primary storyline and you blade a 2min section out of it, when you select the clip (in the primary storyline) and choose Reveal In Event Browser, only that 2min selection will be highlighted in the event browser.
You can then either drag/drop it in a keyword collection, or maybe create a shortcut key for your keywords, which again is a faster way to process clips to a keyword collection 🙂
Let me know if you don’t understand my workflow and I’ll try put together a video screen-case in the next few days.
