Doh! I’ll correct myself, you can add custom notes to favourites and keywords, but you have to toggle the clip to see them. I guess renaming the favourite is easier in this case.
Hey btw, not sure you know this shortcut, but if you select a bunch of clips in a keyword collection, press the right arrow key, which will toggle all clips to show favourites/keywords added.

Oh I feel your pain Michel. I just completed a project which involved long testimonial interviews, and all I wanted to do was be able to rename my favourites and drop them in a keyword collection. Unfortunately all I got was the original clip name, and had to toggel to see the amended favourite name. You should have heard the colourful words come out of my mouth :-/
what’s worst, I though ha… I can get around this, I’ll just add that custom name to a note which each clips should hold it’s own custom notes. We’ll exactly, “each clip” holds notes not each favourite. Try it, add a few favourites to one clip, drop this in a keyword collection and try adding some notes… POW.. right in the kisser. So much for metadata! Sorry I’m just having a blond moment 🙂
Actually come to think of it, I recently had another issue with the same project where I’d already built my project, but then needed to change the file names of the clips in the timeline to reflect the clip name in the event. This was possible in 7 but not in X 🙁 I did manage to manually make changes clip by clip, but let me tell you it wasn’t fun. Hopefully Apple see name change as a worthy need and maybe, just maybe add this on a future update :-/

That’s too funny, Noah is the same guy that emailed me when I made them aware of a problem I was having in 10.0.3. That problem was fixed in 10.0.4 :-))))

Totally understand, however wasn’t the original post about “how to or how do”…?

How do you deal with the one edit per project architecture of FCPX? I think there are many, many issues to spiral out of control over with FCPX, but this framework that Apple is created — where a project IS a single timeline, and therefore IS a single cut — baffles me. And I have no idea how I would work around it.
The idea that, with clients in the room asking to see a subtle difference between two versions of an edit (“here’s one that starts with the wide, here’s one that starts with a medium,” that kind of thing), I need to actually click between different PROJECTS is just… well, I find it laughably useless.”
Makes me laugh how sidetracked this post has become.
Anyway since Kevin hasn’t been back to ask further questions, I think I’ll just sit back and enjoy where this post has headed 🙂

Bill is there a way of maybe organising a video conference gathering and maybe once or twice a moth have a professional get together throwing workflow’s or workarounds at each other?

You mean FRY….! To give you an idea, I just started a project about 15min ago, 4x 1hr HDV tapes which need to be skimmed/trimmed, some shots need 50% slow-mo, fade in/outs and music added. I’m just about done :-))))) GOD BLESS THIS MAGNETIC TIMELINE (Most of the time that is LOL..)

Kevin, the problem is this, when you’ve been editing for many years (personally 25 till date), one thinks you can just jump from software to software because there somewhat similar. That’s the mindset I had when I first tried X. The fact is I never thought I’d need to purchase training to guid me through, but to my surprise I did.
After attempting to understand X in the first week, I went ahead and purchased Larry Jordan’s training, and soon after Ripple Training. I can’t tell you how important it is, even as an experienced editor that you invest in some training.
Even so, I spent 9 months trying to use FCPX like FCP 7. I used compound clips as sequences, never once used projects, and found myself copy/pasting between compounds to build my timeline. Like I said, I did this for the first 9 months till I forced myself to embrace Events, Keyword Collections, skimming & started using projects as they were intended. I can’t begin to tell you how much “FASTER” I’m building my timeline this way.
I think the biggest problem is trying to forcefully use X like 7, which I for one can vouch for. If you can only find it in yourself to allow for change, I think you’ll be back on these forums sharing your positivity towards X.
I’ve spent many hours reading forums, and at times participating in questions, but the one question that keeps popping up by a lot professionals is workflow. Workflow can be hard to explain, only because individuals like to do it “their” way.
I’m no accredited FCPX trainer and wish I had the time to share my experiences and workflow. So wish this forum had a live chat option like Skype 🙂

Peter, this really depend on the workflow you use, DSLR or tape.
Being a freelance editor using FCPX, this is my personal workflow. If I’m asked to edit in-house, then I carry 2x WD My Passport FW 800 drives, which for me work flawless providing I optimise the media on import.
If for arguments sake your student can’t afford external FW800 drives, and want to use a USB2 instead, they can, but they’ll need to transcode and edit proxy’s.
This is my DSLR Workflow:
- As we know first thing is first, have them transfer their SD cards to a dedicated backup HD.
- With 2x external HDD’s connected, open FCPX
- In your Event Library, select drive 2 and create a new Event
- Then choose File/Import/Files or shortcut is Shift+Command+I
- Navigate to drive 1, select your rushes and before importing, select create optimized media if using FW800 drives, or create proxy media if using a USB2 drive.
- While the transcoding is being processed, the students can begin sorting their rushes in keyword collections, and skimming/trimming material
Choosing to optimise your media does two things. First it allows for easier editing, and two FCPX transcodes these files in the Event which they’ll be working in. This means if they then eject that HDD and take that home to edit, all they need to do is re-connect, open FCPX and begin editing. Do keep in mind that transcoding NEEDS TO BE FINISHED before they can eject their drive. Another thing to remember, make sure projects are being created on drive 2 and not drive 1.
I do this daily and have never experienced hiccups. Again I can;t stress how important ant it is that media is optimised before editing, and creating events/projects are done on the drive they’ll need portable.
If on the other hand their shooting tape, then the approach is a tad different.
- First open FCPX and create a new Event
- Click on the camera tab, and begin capturing your tapes.
This will capture directly to your event, which should be the portable HDD they’ll be taking to and from university.
Tape workflow I found is a tad easier as you don’t have to worry about transcoding, importing and so on. But regardless of your workflow, FCPX is very capable in handling what FCS offered and more IMHO.
