    John,

Thanks, that’s exactly what I needed. It’s amazing how even after using FCP for years I can be lost when I need to do something that I’ve simply never had to do before!

Definitely wait until afterwords. That way you have an HD master of your program for future use. For downconversion to SD for burning an SD DVD using either iDVD or DVD Studio Pro, check out this link:

This process has been working great for me.

    Kevin,

    Experiment with this:

I too am using Final Cut Studio 2. I’ve found dropping the EX1 footage in a DV timeline, rendering and then going out to DVCAM looks horrid.

The process in the link above seems to work great for SD DVD output.

As far as conversion to HDV, I simply create a new sequence using the HDV 1080i 60 easy setup and drop my final XDCAM EX movie in the timeline, render and then print to tape. Looks great.

What is your final output? SD DVD or a tape based?

The best solution I have found is to edit my XDCAM sequence and then convert to HDV at the end. Send that back to the EX1 via firewire. Then hook DVCAM deck up from EX1 via component and let the EX1 do the SD downconversion either to letterbox or pan-scan.

My experience says that is indeed NOT true. I can also find nothing in the manual about it.

To add to my last post. I went over and read some of the discussion in the HDV forum. You can’t get a realtime preview of HDV editing over the firewire to the EX1 (to view scrubbing and edits). That’s simply not possible with any HDV camera. You CAN print your final edited sequence to tape through the firewire input and record to the SxS card in the EX1.

Set the EX1 to SP 1080 60i. Make sure the “iLink” in and out is enabled and turn the camera to media mode. Press STOP to put the camera in stop mode (blue screen). Start your HDV print to tape from your computer and then hit the record button on the EX1 handle. Works great! Hope this helps!

If your final destination is a tape based format, record your finished HDV sequence BACK to the EX1. Then hook your EX1 up to your deck via a component connection and let the camera do the down-converting. If your final destination is DVD, you’d want to figure out a better way in software.
